The title probably makes it seem like I have the attitude of: I just want it over…But is ins’t.

My question comes from the rule that if you attend Mass after sundown, you have completed your Sunday Obligation.
**Does this apply also with meat? **

Does the meat abstinence end at sundown of Friday, or Friday at 11:59:59PM?

Also, a side question relating to the topic.
What should I do about school lunches? My (public) school only serves main dishes with meat. I even tried a salad, but it also includes meat.

It ends at midnight 12:00 am Saturday morning.

Take you lunch on Fridays or other days of abstinence then.

From the Code of Canon Law:
Canon 202 §1. In law, a day is understood as a period consisting of 24 continuous hours and begins at midnight unless other provision is expressly made…(Source)

Three options…
Don’t eat lunch on those days -
Don’t take a main dish. Just take side dishes -
Get the salad (no dressing) and remove as much of the meat as you are able to.

Because I find it more ‘tradition’ i take a page from the jews and go by from nightfall day before to night fall day of. Makes it fun.

Would anybody who knows care to take a stab at this subsidiary question: If a solemnity should fall on a Saturday, does the Friday abstinence still run through to midnight, or does it end at first vespers of the solemnity (i.e., on Friday evening)?

The idea behind a fast is that it is a sacrifice, and one that we should make willingly. If we fast from meat on Fridays and instead eat lobster, is that really a sacrifice? If a person is unable to fast from meat for some reason, they can offer another type of sacrifice - from TV, other foods (soda, coffee, between meal snacks, etc.), or something that is a bit difficult.

Why do we fast? Is it only because it’s a rule? If we resent the fast we make, does it really benefit us spiritually? I’m not saying don’t fast - I am saying to try to orient your fast to pleasing God.

God is interested in our hearts - are they turned toward Him? Fasting can help us draw nearer to God. We offer up our hunger or inconvenience to Him. It’s the least we can do for all He has done for us.
