It depends on which Church I go to. My Parish church uses incense on some occasions. The church I usually go to doesn’t use it. It’s a small church with a low ceiling and the fire alarm goes off from the smoke.

In my opinion, it’s not used enough. I see it used at every Exposition, but it’s rarely used during Mass, except perhaps the Big Two. I’d love to see incense at more Holy days.

Now Holy water is a different story. The first three rows are the splash pad. My priest thinks we all need some extra dousing! 😅

it depends. we had incense at an installation Mass and at Christmas.
so i couldn’t really vote. we do not have incense every Sunday.

Yes, that particular church does. I don’t really know, but the fire safety code might require it. And when it goes off, the fire engine arrives. 🚒👨‍🚒

Indeed. Due to our fire system, we’re on a first name basis with the local firefighters now. Good Friday was especially interesting. No incense, but candles set off the system during the passion narrative. No one knew how to reset it so two fire trucks showed up during the veneration of the cross. After they left, the system went off again and the same guys came back. Sundays have been equally fun for all.

Every mass. Multiple times. We all leave smelling of incense.

Former parish it was all the time. That’s the primary reason it’s my former parish. I’m deathly allergic and even when they didn’t use it for one mass it was so pervasive I still couldn’t breathe. So myself and all the old vets with COPD just go elsewhere.

As with other posters, the fire alarms have gone off multiple times at that church.

Well, he does hear the confessions. 😆😆😆

I’ve had a few priests who absolutely loved incense. One would just practically shovel the incense into the thurible. Another bought only the best Eastern Orthodox rose incense.

In my opinion, the right amount of incense is the amount which makes everyone in the pews pass out. 😉

It is indeed code in the States, and I would imagine in much of Europe. I know it is in the UK because I actually saw one in my BIL’s church. It’s strange to see such a modern item in the midst of the old.

Just as a side note, we even had to have a specific number of fire alarms and a fire extinguisher when we prepared our house for rental (I know that varies by state, but not by much according to my property broker husband).

For the post, I picked during feasts and solemnities. I like it, and wish it was done more.

Every 8:30 am and 11:00 am Masses in the Cathedral, near where I live uses incense, cross and candles at those times. The Cathedral Rector presides at those Masses

Priests in the Philippines really loves incense so we put 3 charcoal on a thurible so when they put three large scoops the charcoal wont die.

I haven’t smelt church incense in a long time.
I saw it once - on a TV mass - not long ago.
It reminded me when I was an altar boy - and I carried the item on a chain -
very cool memory !

Being the thurifer is like you have the power to either make the people pass out from to much smoke or bring peace xD

Christmas, Easter and most funerals.

The reason why? People complain tooooooo much.

My church and most in my area only use incense for adoration and on Maundy Thursday, because it is required. As to why I’d say because it is too Catholic. It goes along with never saying the Confiteor or Roman Canon.
