What do I do? I haven’t been to mass in a while because I couldn’t bring myself, so that might be part of the problem. I feel that the God and the Church don’t care. I’ve thought about converting to Orthodoxy or Anglicanism because they do Christian community so much better.

Advice?

What do they do, Christian community-wise, that’s better?

Yes, can you better explain your problem? The intellectual idea that God doesn’t care is so foreign to Christianity that you couldn’t convert to any denomination and think God will start to care more about you. All Christians believe that God’s love is infinite.

This is because God is infinite and is not made up of parts-- God does not love a little here, a little here, a little here. God’s being is infinite, knowledge (intellect) infinite, and love (will) infinite. God doesn’t just know a little bit, nor does God love a little bit.

All I can do without more of an understanding of your position is assure you that you are wrong, and that converting to another religion is not the answer to your problems.

There are many men and women fasting every day and offering up their sacrifices to implore extra graces for your very soul. Do not lose heart! 🙂

I agree that Christians believe God is love itself, but it can be kind of hard to figure out how that all works. Especially since we like to see certain “justice” like the Good Guys always get good things, and the Bad Guys get what is coming to them. And one would think God is pretty harsh on do-bad people but then we see things like:

Matt 5:44-45
But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.

I want to say wait a minute, how is that fair? But then I say wow He gives us all what we need even if we are not “measuring up” to some level of righteousness. So it would seem He loves us and our enemies to at least give us what we need to live our lives {and have our free will} – no matter whether we are they are righteous. That kind of makes sense, or God would have killed Paul while he was still Saul.

As far as whether God would love you in another church, I propose that whether God cares about and/or loves you as an individual, is independent of the behavior of any particular church denomination or worship place you may attend. If you buy into the behavior, attitudes, and speech of others, you may get a different impression.

No doubt you are in pain but you’ve just left an online forum with three statements that are so vague and big one could drive a proverbial truck through them.

“I haven’t been to mass in a while because I couldn’t bring myself, **so that might be part of the problem. **” You think? Avoidance never really solves a problem

“I feel that the God and the Church don’t care.” About what? Who?

“I’ve thought about converting to Orthodoxy or Anglicanism because they do Christian community so much better.” It’s my experience that if someone is upset “inside” they will be upset no matter where they go.

Help us help you. More details about anything may help if you want advice. If you just wanted to blow off steam, you did it and should not expect anything more from an anonymous online forum.

Dear nysacerdote-

I may be way off, but I think I know what you are trying to say. I had been away from the Church for many years and have just recently returned. I keep pushing myself to go to Mass each week even though no one in the parish I belong to so far has reached out to me to welcome me or even say hello to me when they see me each week. I find it a bit discouraging, but I continue to attend because I want to be in “right” relationship with God.

Now, before everyone jumps on this post to say the problem must be me…I am extremely/painfully shy with a pronounced social anxiety disorder, so for me to reach out to them and introduce myself is way beyond something I am capable of. I do want fellowship as I’m sure that nysacerdote does, but for some people, like me, breaking that barrier when you’re the new person in the situation is beyond difficult…it borders on the impossible.

Having said that, nysacerdote, don’t despair of God’s love/care. His children, including you and I, are human and do not always exhibit/extend His love to “strangers” the way we should, but that doesn’t mean that God doesn’t care.

I will include you in my prayers…that God will manifest His care for you in an undeniable way and that your brothers and sisters in Christ will reach out to you in a concrete way.

In Christ’s love-

Sounds like you are a bit discouraged and disillusioned about people. But give some second thoughts to this. Noone on earth is perfect, noone. And so we all become downhearted when we are let down by what we see. But that is just a part of our humanity…broken. So have pity on those you see as imperfect, and then our good Lord Jesus will have pity on you too.

I say: “Peace upon you.”

I used to think much in the same way as you regarding the issue of “community.” I thought the only real reason I’d ever want to formally become a member of a church was to have that sort of community.

While community of worship is obviously a cornerstone of Christianity, I urge you to also look at it in a different way. It doesn’t mean that you’re a part of a social club. Congregations can tend to be extremely cliquey and gossipy, even, as even the Pope has discussed.

That’s not the reason to go or not go, in my opinion. You became a member of the Catholic Church and joined a specific parish in order to receive the sacraments. That is your duty. It can be an outlet to maximize your ability to do good in your own community (and indeed there are often many, many different ways to become involved in local ministries, whether they be homeless outreach, prison outreach, AIDS outreach, etc.). View your relationship to your parish as the road to get you to God. Not a means to satisfy your social life or feel like you belong and fit in well to a social club. A lot of people have that aspect of it for themselves too, and a lot of times those people get lost in the actual purpose of the parish, and themselves fall prey to the temptation to alienate people and gossip and form cliques.

When you wake up early on a Sunday to go to Mass, that is a sacrifice for God. Think of it all as a sacrifice. If you don’t get excessive personal satisfaction, social prestige, and a bolstered sense of importance when you go to church, all the better for its actual purpose, I say.

There is a saying if you think God doesn’t care/love me, who moved? I would make an appointment with a priest and discuss your past hurt and isolation and how to return. If you are not attending Mass, I am not sure how you can then say the Catholic Church doesn’t care. If you are not there, the Catholic community can’t. There is another saying that if you think you’ve found the “perfect” church, once you join it will no longer be perfect. Maybe other Christian communities seem more caring etc etc etc but if you are not attending your current one (Catholic) is that fair to say? Please and again call your nearest Catholic Church discuss your past hurt with him and return. Whatever issue caused you to stop, are in every other Church as well.

What do I do?..

Advice?
Stay in the Church nysacerdote. Remember that ultimately your in the Church because the Church is the Church of God brought to us by Son and HS. No other protestant church brings you what you need to find God.
True that many CChurches are poor in being good examples of Christian behavior but remember it’s about you and your relationship with God first, then others second.

Going to another church will take you backwards in your journey and you may never find yourself back. It’s not worth it!

Also, learn more about the beauty of the Church in it’s Traditions and Dogmas. Once you have a grasp of the Truth, you’ll truly never want to leave. Good luck and God Bless You in your journey.

“What do I do?”

Maybe you could start by telling us a little more explicitly what the issue is. Until you do that, anything anyone says here will be a shot in the dark.
