A quick lesson before I go to teach CCD and RCIA…

The passages mentioned above, and below in context, both state that the two shall become one flesh. Note that Christ did not say the two shall become one soul or the two shall be come one, Christ is speaking of the flesh. He is speaking of the physical union of a husband and wife, and then he follows in preaching against divorce.

Mark 10

‘God made them male and female.
7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate."
AND

Matthew 19:

He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’
5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
Thank you for the Bible Study. But I NEVER said that the two become one soul. Soulmates are two distinct souls becoming one. This ridiculous exchange of nonsense is over. Have a great class. You do know your faith but perhaps you could use a little lesson in listening… Just as we share in the divine nature in the Eucharist and become one with Christ, we share in the union of covenantal marriage and become one with each other…teachccd 🙂

My my! I said, over and over, that the phrase “you complete me” came from a movie. That the idea of a soul mate is not in the Bible.

Debate is about the ideas, the teaching from Scripture and Tradition. I have debated those points. You are the one who took this as a personal affront on your marriage.

I’ve backed up all I have said, I am sorry that is not enough for you, and I apologize that you take those things as an personal insult, they were not intended as such.
It is enough. I apologize for my behavior and I accept your apology. I never saw your movie. Just stating real life for the OP but I’m sure he got scared and ran away:eek: Have a good class. I’m done here. My helpmate has my coffee waiting…😉 teachccd

Personally, my bride and I have been married over 28 yrs. She was 27 and I was 25 when we married. I don’t think I really took seriously the idea of a covenantly sacramental relationship until I was almost 35. She took those vows much more seriously than I did in the very beginning and really nourished our relationship through thick and thin. Thank God for her persistence. It’s not that I didn’t want to be a husband, but I never understand what that truly meant until I fully matured. Maybe men take longer to understand that, at least that was my case. Good thing, because our marriage is what I take great pride in and as a result, we now instruct marriage prep in our parish. Prayer is the center of our relationship…our prayer together as a couple daily to God to strengthen us and be there for us when it feels like the wine has run out at Cana. He’s there in our life daily, as the third strand of a strong rope that binds us together. Our kids have come to appreciate that bond as well.
No matter how long a couple or how early a couple wishes to marry…if you don’t keep God as the center…you will struggle in your relationship. That’s what I have come to learn. That doesn’t mean you might not have struggles with finances, health, work, housing, children etc…but at least you will come to rely on the covenant to be there as you promised in those vows you took before God on your wedding day. Just keep praying!

And if you are struggling…go get the movie Fireproof!!👍

The individuals forming the couple should get married when:
  • They each have job skills, so they can reasonably support themselves in the manner in which they’d like to become accustomed, or at least pay for how they plan to live all by themselves. As we’ve seen recently on CAF, you never know when God is going to call you or your spouse. Both potential spouses should be ready to be the one that dies, and be the one left here on Earth.
*They can each do their own finances without causing themselves angst and stress, so that the finances can be meshed upon the actual marriage.
  • They have transportation.
  • They’ve spent a little time living on their own, without Mom and Dad there to bail them out, do the laundry, cook the meals, etc.
  • They have long conversations with each other about religion, finances, politics, family dynamics, and most of all, celebrating holidays and when is taco night (or roast beef night or hot dog night), to the point where the wedding pretty much plans itself because these things have already been discussed, and each knows either what the other’s family expects or what they are going to do about this wedding business.
When those conditions have been met, it’s time to go see Father at the bride’s parish (unless you’re in one of the Eastern Churches, which means it’s time to go see Father at the groom’s parish). You will notice there is no actual, chronological age listed.

Outin, some of the stuff isn’t completely necessary. People have married and been happy without being pro’s in all those.

When you cannot wait a minute longer, is a good time to get married.

If you wait beyond that time, you may compromise yourself, and regret it later.

As for me, I have not yet reached that point, and I am still waiting. Maybe when I am in the old folks home.
