When is a sin Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

Okay, here’s my question - probably a lame one and I am pretty certain of the answer . . . but I want to be certain before I receive the Eucharist on Sunday.

I am wondering when a sin can be Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. In my situation, I was thinking about the charismatic practice of Baptism of the Holy Spirit, when I read an opinion by someone who asserted that it was either demonic or at least not involving the Holy Spirit. Later on, I was thinking about it when the thought crossed my mind for two or three seconds that this Baptism may/could be demonic or at least not of the Holy Spirit. I quickly decided that it was not demonic - but are my thoughts sinful? Did I attribute the actions of the Holy Spirit to a demon, and commit a mortal sin? I am the kind of person who questions my beliefs in depth before fully accepting them, and this may have been such a situation. Assuming that the Holy Spirit is present in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, did I commit a mortal sin? Should I at least confess it to a priest?

Random passing thoughts are not mortal sins. If you dwell on them that can be another matter. In this case I would say that you are OK to receive communion.

Having said that, I would still run it by your confessor and get his take on it. He might also help you better understand the issue that led to these thoughts.

I was actually wondering something similar, - if a person accidently decides that something from the Holy Spirit is demonic, and believes that, but later on changes their mind… have they committed the unforgiveable sin? or is it a sin but forgiveable? I really need to know cause I’m afriad I’ve been in some deception lately… I was under a lot of temptation and really felt that my (genuine) experiences with God have been false, and even demonic… but I don’t think that’s actually the case. I believed this for a bit and now I feel so far from God. Could it be that this is the unforgiveable sin?? I repented of this and changed my mind…

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is refusal of God’s offer of forgiveness. As long as you accept his offer of forgiveness, it is not the unforgiveable sin.

that’s what I’ve been told, yet I’m having trouble understanding this when I look at Matthew 12… does it just mean that the Pharisees were so hardened against God in their hearts and that’s why they said this about the Holy Spirit? (and apparently, didn’t repent?) yet Christ didn’t mention repentance…He just said, if anyone says such words against the Holy Spirit, that’s the unforgiveable sin…

I just don’t get it sometimes I really don’t want to lose God or my salvation…
