In connection with the recent meat-on-Friday threads, I have a question of curiosity. For me, Friday starts about 0900 Friday morning, when I get up, and lasts until about 0630 Saturday morning, when I get home from my night shift and go to bed. Should I go by what I feel is Friday, or should I go strictly by the clock and send out for a Hardee’s Thickburger at 0001 Saturday morning by the clock?

Hi. I also work the night shift, 11 P.M. - 7 A.M.

I start my Friday at 7 A.M. Friday morning, when my shift is over and end it at 7 A.M. the next day, when my shift is over. When I am not working, my Friday always begins when I get up in the morning and ends when I get up the next morning. I don’t go by the clock but by the DAY, so if I get up at midnight, for a snack, I still can’t eat meat, until the new day starts.

still new to siteso not aware of meat on friday thread, i was under the impression that i can eat meat on friday but not good friday, is this a misunderstanding on my part?

Most certainly. Roman Catholics of age and health are required to abstain from meat during all the Fridays of Lent as an act of penance.

In the United States, Roman Catholics should perform an act of penance on every Friday–even those outside of Lent. This can be abstaining from meat, but it could also be something else entirely, like giving to the poor.

I, too, always fast by my internal clock – The part of me that *feels * like it is Friday (or whatever day I am fasting otherwise).

But canonically-speaking:
TITLE XI: THE RECKONING OF TIME (Cann. 200 - 203)
Can. 200 Unless the law provides otherwise, time is to be reckoned in accordance with the following canons.
Can. 202 §1 In law, a day is understood to be a space of twenty-four hours, to be reckoned continuously and, unless expressly provided otherwise, it begins at midnight; …]
I know that is a correct way to behave, but to me it just doesn’t *feel * right. I get a cheap feeling from folks I know who binge just before midnight and break their fast just after midnight. But I cannot say they are behaving incorrectly, only that I behave in the way that feels right to me. I pray God is merciful to me in this regard.

That practice is very typical of Muslims during Ramadan, the month in which they are supposed to fast from dawn to dusk. They stay up and party all night long; it has been reported that many of them actually gain weight during this month.

Right now I am eating normally on Fridays, but doing extra penance. During Lent I think I’ll skip the ThickBurger at 0001 and pretend I’m in the Hawaii time zone. If only I were actually there… 😛

I must confess when I do have a fasting friday as opposed to an abstaining friday I tend to eat a midnight feast :o

You guys are obviously all too young to remember the old days. Friday ran from 12:00 midnight to midnight. Ya sat around waiting for the clock to strike before you chomped into the double pepperoni pizza you ordered at 11:30 . . . .

I believe the midnight “rule” still stands, although you could make a case for sunset to sunset . . . All of this fades to insignificance if you never eat between meals.
