When is it acceptable to cross one's self?

=MarshallJackson;10667702]I am particularly new to the Catholic faith, and I have been wondering when it is appropriate to cross myself? I feel very strongly about doing so, and it makes me feel very confident in my day to day activities. It helps to remind me that the Lord is here with me in everything that I do. For example, I usually cross myself before I walk out the door, and when I return. What are other times in which to cross one’s self? Are there any times where it is not appropriate to do so?

I’m going to sound like a smart-alec here; BUT I’m absoutely serious.

It would be easier to ask: when [if ever?] is it inapproiate to do so:) I can’t think of one off-hand.

This is the “mark” the “sign” of a “Catholic”; do it as often as you feel inclined to do so. It is a Proud affirmation of our Catholic Faith. BUT in doing so be aware that all tose seeing you do so will judge your other actions as a Catholic.

So be careful to not for example “cross yourself” and then tell or listen to an obscene joke.

With the Cross come the weight of responsible actions. Amen

You are right. It wouldn’t be a good idea to use the sign of the cross in order to start a fight. 🙂
 
The Sign of the Cross is espeacilly apropriate whenever one starts and ends a prayer or act of devotion/piety indeed St, John vianney was seen crossing himself near constantly at some points in his life. It is good to use as a silent prayer whenether Our Lord and other Holy things are called to mind and also whenether one pases the real presence whether in a church or elsewhere, so if there was a sick call in a room and I walked past I would likely cross myself. Also when “signs of christ” pass by or example a priest going to or from the Altar in his Vestments, a Processional Cross and the Paschal candle at the Easter vigil etc this could even apply to a bishop in Choir dress (or similer) as he represents Christ the Head.

I also recomend getting a stoup to put Holy Water in so you can cross youreself with it as you go about life in youre home.

However, the sign of the cross is a form of prayer, so whenever you make it, you are not only asking for God’s intervention, you are asking for the intervention of all the saints in heaven. The sign of the cross is asks so much of all the saints in heaven and of God, but it is under-appreciated today.You should make the sign of the cross when you hear bad news, especially death, injury, or prejudice. There are two ways to make the sign of the cross, the Latin way and the Byzantine way. I suggest you learn both. Sometimes, I make the Latin sign of the cross, and other times I make the Byzantine sign of the cross. I do this to express the universality of our Holy Church. I make the sign of the,when I pray,when I was in the Hosptial,and going down to be operated on, before I eat,to thank God for the food I have been giving to eat, when I go to bed,at times when I walk,and want to pray. :signofcross:
 
And, as I work in a hospital, another time is whenever I hear the helicopter (which means that someone is either being life-flighted into us, or it’s serious enough that they’ve been life-flighted from us to a Level 1).
 
I like making the sign of the cross whenever I see a holy image. Some Hispanics bless their children with the sign of the cross every time they leave the home.
 
All of your answers are great 🙂 Thank you for your patience, as I know I’m still a “newbie” 😛 but you guys are great! I’m so excited to be able to acknowledge my faith in times of trouble or simply in times when I feel the need to do so. Expression of my faith helps me live it more thoroughly. Faith without works is dead, and I feel the same can go for expression of faith. If I see all of the horrible things happening in this world and simply think of it as something in the “norm” or brush it off as something not to care about (as I always did before I converted to the Catholic faith), what good am I doing? The way I look at it, I am doing no good. Anyway, I can go on all day about it, but I’m just infinitely excited about growing stronger in my relationship with God! 🙂
