Is it permissible to morally breach someone’s trust outside of matters of life or death? (Ex. Someone tells you they’re suicidal and asks you not to tell anyone.)

Assuming the breaching action is not sinful in nature, is it a sin to breach that trust, or simply a morally neutral action?

Thanks. 🙂

My rule of thumb: I’ll never betray your trust unless you tell me you are going to hurt yourself or someone else. Than, I’m going to try my best to get you some help.

Do you wish to be known as a trustworthy friend, employee, neighbor or as a blabbermouth?

Thanks so much for replying, but that’s not what I asked. 😦
I asked if it was a sin to betray someone’s trust if you’re not doing it to hurt them. Specifically, I’m looking for a citation from a credible source that it is either a sin or not. If you know anything like that, I’d love to hear it. 🙂

I can’t divulge too many details about the particular case for why I’m asking this, but, this is about an emotionally abusive, co-dependent relationship in which one person is telling the other to stop talking to their friends completely if they still want to be together.

I know the perfect answer is “they shouldn’t be together”, but one of them (the victim) told me that that’s not what they want to hear.

If your friend is being abused, offer them a safe place to land, either with you or with arranging help through a program for abused spouses. When people are in danger, we have a moral imperative to get them to safety.

They are an adult and absolutely refuse to leave the relationship. Neither they nor their loved ones are in any immediate or even remote physical danger from this partner. My hands are tied on that matter, all I can do is pray. But again, I just want to know if it’s a sin for them to talk to these forbidden friends behind their partner’s back or not.

No spouse is bound under pain of sin to obey their spouse’s demands.

Do you have a credible source you could cite on that? The less doubt left, the better! 🙂

, I just want to know if it’s a sin for them to talk to these forbidden friends behind their partner’s back or not.
Let us start by the fact that a husband, or a wife or a boyfriend or a girl friend cannot “ forbid” you or me to do anything.
They may ask, suggest , advice but “ forbid”, no.
So as from there , to get into this sick circle is in itself getting into sickness.
Be straightforward, refuse to get into such sick and childish permanent“ game” . Whenever the person wants to meet ( say) me, can give me a call, the “ secrecy” runs on her/ his side. Friend yes, puppet no.No silly games with me.That is what I would do.

My friend wants to have their cake and eat it too. (Which I think we can all agree isn’t terribly selfish considering the circumstances). They want to talk to their friends and be in this relationship. If they told their partner that they refuse, they would leave (as they are only engaged and not married) and my friend would be totally devastated. The hope is that with enough time of placating them, my friend can get them to get over their jealousy and let them openly talk to their friends again.

That sounds a lot like thinking “they’ll change”, or “I can change him/her”. Unlikely to get better as time goes by.

But again, I just want to know if it’s a sin for them to talk to these forbidden friends behind their partner’s back or not.
Okay, I’m assuming that these friends aren’t former romantic partners or people for whom the spouse has a reasonable basis for jealousy.

In general, nobody has the right to forbid their romantic partners from talking to another person.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever marry someone thinking “they will get over it” or “they will change”. No, never. Marry them if you can accept them exactly as they are today for the next 75 years of your life, as parent to your children exactly as they are today.
