When Jesus suffered on the Cross

I would think as a man. God being God I don’t think he would feel “suffering”.

I’m sure that’s an oversimplification but it’s what I got 👍

Did he suffer as a man or as a man and as God?
Acording to the doctrine of the Hypostatic union, Jesus was *one *person with *two *natures, both human and divine. The redemption was effective because that person offered his suffering in his human nature for the expiation of all human beings. While the person offfering was God, the second person in the divine Trinity, it was in his human nature that the redemptive act was offered.

With this being noted, would that mean that God the Father out of no fault of his own but by design can never understand what it means to suffer as a Human? and if that is the case doesn’t that mean God would not be Omniscience?

i am not certain but i thought i heard that when the body suffers the soul suffers, if this is the case then God probably suffered, but then again im far from a theologian 😊

That would be the “if he can’t experience it he can’t know it” argument. 🙂 But, that’s not the case. The God who created nerves and the brain to receive the messages from the nerves certainly knows what pain is. The God who created the spirit would know what suffering is. He wouldn’t have to have had those sensations himself to know what they were.

God is Love and Love entails Compassion. That is why the Son became a human being and shared our experiences as an individual on earth: joy and life as well as suffering and death. It is absurd to think there is a gulf of any sort between the three divine Persons. Jesus prayed that we may be one as They are One, united in every respect…

I like how you phrased this, thanks.

Since God made us He has to know how we feel. I want to think that Jesus knew exactly what he was going to experience prior to coming. I also believe that while he was the 1 Person of the Godhead to come to earth, they all shared in His suffering.

We would have been a little overwhelmed had 3 divine persons showed up to go through this ordeal. Jesus traded places with us to show all of their love for man. He could have stopped everything at any moment, but allowed his human nature to suffer the most brutal death of the time period. When the man in Him died, He assumed His role as God and continued His mission speaking to the souls waiting for Him.

Thank you PA! Whenever there is a question about God’s nature His infinite love is the most important fact of all. Jesus asked “Which of you can accuse me of sin?” He could equally well have asked “Which of you can accuse me of having failed in any way?”
