When others complain about spouses

Concerning gossip: You are right when you say gossip is damaging. My mother and sister would gossip about me all the time within the family and didn’t consider it gossip because it was in the family. In doing so, they did a great deal of damage to my life and damaged the relationship I had with both of them, to this day I still don’t trust either one of them very much and I have trouble trusting other women in general.

There is just the barest possibility that some of them are trying to make you feel better about being unmarried.

When I was about 28 or 29, my mother started making increasingly pointed comments about the difficulties of being married. This became alarming to me, so I finally asked if she and Daddy were thinking of getting a divorce. She was horrified! Not at all considering divorce, just trying to make me feel better about my unmarried state.

I told her to not worry about me, and the comments stopped.
