How many fall into the “attack and insult” category?
If you’re talking about this thread, I don’t see any “attack and insult” going on here.

Honest and polite criticism, whether it’s of Lizzie, social media, or the people posting negative comments to Lizzie, is part of discussion.

I appreciate that you added a disclaimer that this comment was not directed at me, and I also appreciate that social media is not a “need”, but it is a “nice to have”, is fun and way more convenient for me and my friends than having to call everybody up on the phone (getting together doesn’t work well when you’re two states away from a person and/or busy with work or family), and in the industries in which I work, it would be odd for a person to not use social media to some extent. I enjoy social media and have been using it for almost 25 years (and sporadically before that when I could get a Usenet account, etc).

Lectures about how we don’t “need” social media might be fine for 15-year-olds who don’t understand there’s a lot of other activities out there, but it’s a bit patronizing directed at older adults who presumably can make their own decisions whether social media is a positive or negative for them. There are many platforms, twitter being one, that I choose to not use because it’s not fun or useful for me personally. Somebody else might enjoy it.

I still can’t wrap my head around this. In the context of this issue, who cares if she’s annoying? I guess it’s easier to point out her faults than look at the faults of other Catholics online? I mean, she posted on Twitter at one point that Protestants are Christians, too, and trad Catholics ripped her apart for it. C’mon. Valley girl voice aside, the attacks on her really say something nasty about Catholics to others. Documenting her faith journey ≠ asking for malicious responses.

You have an oddly limited definition of “social media”. Many people I know who are up to 20 years younger than me were on BBS back before the Internet was invented (They were young minors when on BBS, not an ideal situation but it was what it was) and they considered it social media. It was used for all the same things that the Internet made possible on a larger scale when it came along. Usenet was basically social media for tech heads. Social media policies for companies generally cover forums and all the other stuff you listed - they do not just apply to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.

And yes, I’m an old bear. Who has worked in tech industries and with tech clients for most of her career and has most recently been working for a software company for the last decade.

Of course, I’ll be retiring or dying off soon enough and then you younguns can redefine history and terminology all you want.

I think the problem here is more that you have some personalized opinion about “social media” based on your own experiences that is not shared by everybody else in the world and that seems to be mostly your own opinion, not terribly well -informed in my opinion.

Anyway, I don’t see a point in engaging in this discussion any longer; it’s gotten off topic for the thread, so I will mute. Have a nice day.

Just out of curiosity, in what ways do you find these things categorically distinct from other social media? I have always grouped them under the same umbrella. I don’t really see a significant difference between posting here on CAF and posting on Reddit or Twitter (I’m speaking mainly regarding forums…Obviously email is different. I’m not sure what IRC or BBSes are).

I just had problems with her voice. As a convert myself, I admired her passion and excitement on her new faith. For me, time is precious, and I don’t have time to sit throough the giggling and the last times I watched she had her computer and was saying hi to
everyone who joined her on Facebook or twitter - I am
not sure. I need videos that get to the point from the
beginning and don’t waste any time so I can get on with other things.

I’m not, alas, young anymore. But I wonder if her appeal is largely for those under 30? She must suit someone’s tastes, I guess. Not mine, particularly, but someone’s.
