When someone says "putting you in the chalice"

Can anyone explain what that means? I was told it’s because in bringing up the gifts, we as a community are also bringing forward our suffering and needs to be transformed as well…so by putting someone into the chalice, we are essentially not just “praying for them at mass” but offering them up with the gifts as well…am I on track? Thanks

I’ve not heard that phrase myself, but by the definition you give it sounds like “lifting someone up” in prayer.

A friend of mine says this a lot, but usually she’s putting a problem or particular situation “in the chalice”. You guessed correctly that it’s a way of offering our suffering to God.

A nun friend of mine used this expression. She meant that I was in her prayers. She was offering up my needs along with her other requests. That meant a lot to me.

I think that putting you in the chalice is a reference to the concept of the 4th cup. Please read the article “The Hunt for the Fourth Cup” by Scott Hahn to understand the idea.

As catholics the Mass is the ‘source and summit of our faith’. at the consecration of the Mass when the priest raises the Host and Precious Blood, (we have an opportunity to put into the Lords hands any person/situation that is in need of prayer).

The term then ‘putting you in the chalice’ taken literally means to ask God to apply the power of his precious blood to cover, heal and deal with any of the people/situations that we bring to him at this specific point of the Mass, so that they can have a living experience of God in their lives.

IMHO, I love that phrase because when I go to Mass it really reminds me that it is not only for me that I am present at the Mass but for every need, every person or every situation that we have been touched by in our lives.
