when to go to confession

I never really have to go just to “get” graces. No matter how good I have been through the week, I can always find something to confess.

My father one time said this:

The Pope (John Paul II) goes to confession every week. I can’t imagine what sins he could possibly confess. But then again, once you pull the beams from your eyes, it is easier to see all the little spliters.

Oh I am sure I will be able to find tons to confess, lol. But, with a tendency towards scrupulosity, I have to be careful how hard I look for sin, if you know what I mean?

I have heard the same thing about JPII, which makes me want to go often. I am sure it will get easier with time, it’s just not habit for me yet and i tend to overthink things…

Dear Malia,

Do not be confused. You have to go to confession when you feel that you are in the state of mortal sin, however, if it were up to me I would try to go as many times as possible simply due to the fact that you receive Sanctifying Grace in Confession. I know that is not very practical in these times.

There is another reason. Many Catholics may not be aware but there are two instances when we are in the presence of the Risen Lord, when during the Consecration at Mass the priest says the words of Consecration, and when we are absolved of our sins in Confession. In both instances it is Jesus Our Risen Lord who is speaking the Words of Consecration and Absolution.
