I don’t know when it’s appropriate to say a mass for someone. Is it appropriate only when someone is in imminent danger of death or has already died or is it appropriate if their sick (either physically or you are praying for their moral conversion)? Thanks so much!

At my church, there’s a three month backlog - I was able to get a mass said for my uncle on Feb 21st for a 630AM mass. My grandma was at imminent risk of death, but after 12 days the family realized she wasn’t taking her medication and thus she regained the ability to eat when she resumed taking her medications. She’s 102 years old.

My mother-in-law is sick and while she was at risk of dying as she was in the ICU for a week and has a long recovery ahead as well as new adjustments to life (aka having to check her blood sugar and having to wear a bag), she’s no longer at imminent risk of death.

What should I pray for? My uncle has a mother, two children, and three siblings as well as a spouse and the three siblings also have spouses. My mother-in-law has two children, a spouse, and one sibling.

You can have a Mass said for anyone, any time. They don’t have to be dead or at death’s door and they don’t even have to be sick.

If the person is living then the only issue is whether their name is printed in the bulletin. We just had a thread on that and it appeared that some churches won’t print names of living people, other churches give you the option but it’s probably a good idea to opt out of printing the name if the person you’re praying for might not welcome the attention (usually the case when you’re praying for conversions). Alternatively, you could have an online service like Seraphic Mass Association or Missio arrange the Mass and just not send the person a card.

If you’re dealing with a 3 month backlog at your church then I’d recommend using Missio (they can be reached via Facebook Messenger) as they can usually say the Mass within a couple weeks. And you can make one Mass for your whole family and just say it’s for “The Whichwaytogo Family”.

Thanks. Yes, I should have a prayer for the “last name” family.

Good advice i would like to have a mass said for my parents conversion to the faith. I’ll talk with my priest about it and see what he says.
