When to take down your christmas tree

Our ordo follows the Julian calendar. Christmas lasts longer. :yup:

We can stuff our faces longer, before we go back to abstinence and fasting.

Around here the tree usually goes up the weekend before Christmas. It comes down sometime between the Epiphany and the Presentation.

all the needles having fallen off and been swept up,
you still have just enough time
to make an Easter basket from the remaining wood.

Unfortunately Easter is my time of stuffing. Lent is for fasting, Easter is for gaining 110 stone or so.

We still have our wreath up though, but it’s been “Easter-ised”.

I have a LARGE Dairy Milk bar which I plan to devour, and then I need to leave room for chocolate digestives! Also, Easter cake. However, not yet.

But Christmas tree? Should I go anywhere and see someone with it still up, I’d just ask if I could have a slice of fruitcake, sit down with a cuppa, and admire the tree.

We always get a real tree. This year, it really last long. We got it the weekend after Thanksgiving and it was still green around January 20th when we took it down. It was the best tree we’ve ever had. It was 10 ft, cost $30 and lasted almost two months. That’s a real bargain.

Have a blessed Triduum, a holy Passover if you celebrate it, and a glorious Easter Sunday.

I think the traditional custom in this part of the world is to have it down by the Feast of the Presentation (Feb 2) or Ash Wednesday, whichever occurs first.

yes, this is for rcs but remember that the xmas tree is not really rc. so were really talking about the religious decorations. the tree is a secular element of the holiday.

But why January 13th? Is this another feast day? The only info I can find is St. Nut’s Day, which marks the end of the christmas season in Sweden and Finland only.

Maybe because January 13 is the end of the Christmas season in the traditional calendar? It’s the Octave Day of the Epiphany, the Commemoration of the Baptism of our Lord.

In 1970, the Baptism of our Lord became a Feast and was moved to the Sunday or Monday after Epiphany.

This reminded me to take down our wreath on Good Friday… I figure close to Easter would be long enough.to celebrate Christmas… actually we didn’t even notice we still had it up…

Just put a white bow on it and a few flowers and you have an Easter Wreath.

Then too, I seem to remember one year when Pope John Paul II advised us to celebrate Christmas all year long, maybe it was for the year 2000? That was pretty cool. It made doing the dishes much more fun, washing Christmas glasses and drying them with Christmas towels.

I take ours down when the needles start falling off or within two weeks of Christmas.

When we had an artificial tree, we took it down several weeks or even months after Christmas. It was a pain to put together and take apart. One year we still had it up around Easter.

I think we will go back to an artificial tree since real ones are so expensive. BUT we will get one that is a lot easier to set up. The one we have, you have to insert every individual branch into the trunk.

I have a small one that folds up sort of like an umbrella. I opted out of a big one because I have this v.e.r.y fat cat who can’t leave anything alone and I know a disaster when I see one. As it is, she nibbles at the ends of the branches when she thinks I’m not looking.

We have two cats, but they’re very Catholic. The female is Benedictine. She’s all black. The male is Franciscan. He’s grey

They like to look at the tree and sniff at the manger under the three. They don’t bother the tree or the ornaments. They know that they will be dismissed from the order if they mess up.

Our little Franciscan guy even goes to mass. He sits right next to me during the entire mass. I think he follows along in the hymnal too. I’ve caught him staring at the page. But he does not bother the Xmas tree. The Benedictine doesn’t like our mass. I guess she doesn’t like the fact that we don’t chant. But she too is very respectful of the tree. Though I have to admit that she can’t tell a fake Baby Jesus from a real baby. We caught her under the tree giving Baby Jesus a bath. Go figure.

I buy those cheapo trees so I’m lucky if they are still fresh enough to keep until Theophany.

But its Easter and I still have my Nativity scene up
Yes, its mostly laziness, but I also forget to do it, for so long. I don’t use my living room much so I forget its there.

Well, in the East, Advent is also 40 days. But I recognize that difference so I didn’t mention it.

As for Easter, I know technically it ends at Ascension Thursday but some do stretch it out to Pentecost Sunday.
