In reading the motu proprio Mysterii Paschalis, I came across this:
It appears that the Easter Vigil mass as we know it is a recent restoration, or even to some extent an innovation. How long in coming was the revival Paul IV wrote of? In other words when was the Easter Vigil mass suppressed, and why?
Pope Paul’s footnote (3) was Dominicae Resurrectionis, a decree from the Sacred Congregation of Rites. I haven’t been able to find the text of the decree in a brief web search. There is also some information on Easter Vigil practices at the old Catholic Encyclopedia article on Easter, although it’s a little long-winded for me at this late hour. Our predecessor of venerable memory, Pius XII, had decided (3) to revive, within the Church of the West, in the course of the Paschal Night, the solemn Vigil, in which, while celebrating the sacraments of Christian Initiation, the People of God renew their covenant with Christ the Risen Lord.
