“The Ark of the Covenant and all the other necessary Temple furninshings were carried off in triumph to Rome, where you can still see them represented in the sculptures of the Arch of Titus”.

I came across this statement in book : WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT ? by K.Johnson //// rec. by Catholic Digest Book Club

I thought scriptures teach that one of prophets ( Isaiah ??) … hid the Ark in a cave before the Babalonian Captivity ] and it has never been seen since ?

2 Maccabees 2:5 says that Jeremiah hid the original ark of the covenant in a cave. Perhaps what Titus carried away was a copy.

I think the Ark being depicted on the Arch of Titus is a bit of a mistake. Perhaps he meant the other furniture, like the Menorah?

The Ark was believed to have been already gone by the second Temple period. Indeed, the Holy of Holies is said to have only contained a block of stone (known as the Eben ha-Shetiyah, “The Foundation Stone”) at that time, where the priest would have sprinkled the blood of the sacrificial animals, since the Ark was said to have originally rested on that stone (and it was on the ‘mercy seat’ that the High priest used to sprinkle the blood of the sacrificial animals). When the High Priest entered on Yom Kippur, he set the fire-pan with its incense upon the stone and sprinkled the blood in the air, once upward, and seven times downward.

Here is the relevant portion of the Arch. We could see that only the Menorah is explicitly depicted as being carried out:

Thanks Pat457 …

There is no way the Ark was in Temple til 70 AD. Christ was the Word, and Mary the Ark.

Your picture of Arch art … shows the truth of matter.

it says in Revelation starting at chapter 11:19 (skip the chapter division of 12 because they sliced the written Word in the wrong place)
“Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a violent hailstorm. A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”

This pretty much says where the ark is now, the “temple in heaven.”
Some STILL believe it is lost.

Is it not interesting that the Ark winds up in the true Sanctuary in Heaven (of which the one on Earth is merely a shadow or a copy)?
The main point of what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in Heaven, a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle that the Lord, not man, set up. Now every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus the necessity for this one also to have something to offer.
If then He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are those who offer gifts according to the law. They worship in a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary, as Moses was warned when he was about to erect the Tabernacle. For He says, "See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."
Now he has obtained so much more excellent a ministry as He is mediator of a better covenant, enacted on better promises.
-Hebrews 8:1-6
There was even a Jewish tradition which said that the Ark was miraculously transported up to Heaven when Nebuchadnezzar started making his way to the Temple to loot it.

Alternatively, it is only the EARTHLY Ark (a copy of the Heavenly one) that was lost, while the true Ark in Heaven has always been there.

Look, the Ark of the Covenant is in some US government warehouse, Steven Spielburg told us that 😉

Actually (if someone can look up the Scriptural or non-scriptural reference, thank you) I believe the Egyptian army did a raid into Jerusalem just prior to the Babylonian siege of the city (circa 770 BC)–they are the most likely culprits, so Spielburg wasnt all wrong…

I recall reading someplace a few years ago that an Ethiopian Church claims to have it. I don’t remember whether they are Orthodox or Coptic or what.

There is a very good book by Grant R. Jeffrey called “Unveiling Mysteries of the Bible”. It’s great for anyone interested in Biblical Archeology, with a few caveats noted below.

The “KEBRA NAGAST” (The Glory of Kings) is a historical text that is considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Among other things, it describes how Ethiopia became linked to the Davidic Line. While the Queen of Sheba was visiting Solomon, he seduced her and she bore him a son called Menyelek. He later became Menyelek I, the first Emperor of Ethiopia, and the first in a dynasty that extended over 3000 years until the death of Emperor Selassie during a socialist coup on August 22, 1975.

Dr. Jeffrey family, by chance, became friends with one of the surviving princes (who still lives in Canada, I believe), who told him this story:

After Menyelek was born, the Queen left him in the care of the Solomon to be raised by the priests of the Lord. The youth grew in strength, wisdom, and beauty, looking very much like his father. Menyelek grew angry at the abuses of Solomon’s many foreign wives, who put idols to false gods in the Temple of the Lord. When word came that the Queen, his mother, had died and that he must return to Ethiopia, he hatched a plan.

He arranged with several priests who were still faithful to the Lord to have a replica of the Ark made, one that he could bring with him back to Ethiopia. The night before he was scheduled to leave, there was a great party in Menyelek’s honor, and he arranged to get Solomon very drunk. While Solomon was sleeping off his drunkenness, Menyelek and the faithful priests swapped out the real Ark with the replica, and left with servants, families, etc. for Ethiopia.

When Solomon awoke and discovered what had happened, he roused his army to go bring them back; however, they were stopped by the Lord. The Lord told Solomon to return to Jerusalem; that the Lord had His fill of Solomon’s desecrations of the Temple by his wives, and that Menyelek would be entrusted with the Ark until G_D called it back to Israel.

Fast forward 3000 years. The Ark had remained hidden from the outside world for all this time, but now the socialist coup threatened its safety. Israel began negotiating with a group of Ethiopian generals, who ransomed the Ark for several million dollars and safe passage to Switzerland. The Israelis agreed, and one night a group of Israeli commandos with several government officials entered St. Mary’s church. The commandos included a group of men who met the requirements of the Kohanim, and covered by an Israeli flag, moved the Ark from St. Mary’s to be taken back to Israel.

The Ethiopian generals, BTW, were very distressed when they arrived in Switzerland to find that:
a) the dollars they had been paid were all counterfeit, and
b) someone had tipped off the Swiss that these men were trying to bring counterfeit money into Switzerland.

So if Dr. Jeffrey is to be believed, and his source (a member of the royal family involved in the negotiations) is to be believed, the Ark is in Israel being hidden until the right time comes to reveal it.

P.S. As far as caveats in Dr. Jeffrey’s book, the biggest one is that as a Protestant, he cannot accept Catholic doctrine, even when that’s where his logic leads him. For example, Dr. Jeffrey lays out a logical, scriptural comparison of the Ark of the Covenant and Mary, showing that Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant, down to the case for the Immaculate Conception. The problem is when he’s driving on that road that proves the Immaculate Conception, where you can see the destination, over that bridge, just before crossing that bridge he makes a hard right turn and goes driving along the river, saying, “Whoa, kids, we don’t want to go THERE; let’s go HERE, and hey – look at the birds!”

After Menyelek was born, the Queen left him in the care of the Solomon to be raised by the priests of the Lord. !"
Doesn’t sound credible.
Not that Solomon didn’t have a supersized sexual appetite … but,
I’m sure such events would of made ‘big news’ with the Hebrews.

It was most likely lost during the time of Jeremiah. Early in his writings, he talks about how the Ark should not be carried about any more by certain people. Then later, when speaking of God comforting His people, he says that they will no longer seek for the Ark (the implication being that the Ark was no longer there).

That legend (recounted in a medieval Ethiopian work called the Kebra Negast) may not have been true (or does contain small traces of facts mixed with legend), but Graham Hancock, in his controversial work The Sign and the Seal proposed that the Ark (Tabot Seyen, “the Ark of Zion”) was taken away by horrified priests from Jerusalem when Manasseh became king of Judah (cf. 2 Kings 21:1-18).

The priests then took the Ark first to Elephantine in Egypt, where a Jewish community existed, having a Temple of their own (which also functioned as a temple of the Egyptian god Khnum) there. From then on, the Ark made some various stops at various places until finally ending up in Axum.

The Ethiopians believe that the Ark was not continuously in Axum for 3000 years since Menelik supposedly brought it there as it was also hidden in various places at various times to protect it from invaders, such as in the island of Tana Qirqos (the region around Lake Tana was also a purported stronghold of Judaism before it passed on to the Christians). Ethiopian tradition even says that the Holy Family made their way to Tana Qirqos during their stay in Egypt, where they stayed for ten days.

Here’s an interesting (if long) article about the Ark in Ethiopia.

As for me, if the Ark in Ethiopia is not THE true Ark of the Covenant, then it is possible that it was a copy that was brought there.

If I might add this (taken almost verbatim from another thread):

THE NUMBER OF THE ARK IN JEWISH MIDRASH

The most popular opinion today is that there was only one Ark, the one made by Bezalel, which contains both the first and second sets of the Tablets of the Law:

However there exists other opinions, such as:

1.) The ‘two Arks’ hypothesis: This opinion (held by Rashi and some Midrashim) posits that there were two Arks; one created by Moses (usually said to be a temporary one), and a later one created by Bezalel.

Alternatively, these two Arks coexisted with each other during the time of the Israelites in the wilderness; with the one containing the first set of the Tablets of the Law which Moses broke accompanying the Israelites into battle while the one containing the second set of the Tablets was enthroned in the Tabernacle (cf. Yerushalmi [Jerusalem Talmud] Shekalim vi. 49c).

This seems to seek to reconcile the statement that Moses made in Deuteronomy 10:3 where it is said that he created an Ark made of ‘shittim wood’ before coming up to Mt. Sinai to recreate the Tablets of the Law with Exodus 37:1-9, where Bezalel creates the Ark made of shittim wood plated with gold after Moses went up the mountain.

2.) The three Arks hypothesis: Another opinion (also found in the [Babylonian] Talmud: Tractate Yoma 72b; Jerusalem Talmud, Tractate Shekalim vi. 49d) held the opinion that Bezalel made three Arks, which he put inside of one another. The outside and inside ones were made of gold, and measured respectively ten cubits and a fraction and eight cubits, while the middle one was of wood and measured nine cubits.

Lake Tana was also a purported stronghold of Judaism before it passed on to the Christians). Ethiopian tradition even says that the Holy Family made their way to Tana Qirqos during their stay in Egypt, where they stayed for ten days.

PBS did a hour long special on the Ark in Ethiopia. Keep in a small brick structure … with guards/fence. They won’t let anyone in to view it.

Now my question for them … since their Ethiopian Rite is part of RCC. Why not offer to let the Pope come view and verify their claims.

I think we know the answer 🙂

Maybe they have a copy … but, the original was seen by John in a different location.

The Ark can only be viewed by its guardian (chosen by the senior priests of Axum and the former guardian), or so say the Ethiopians; no patriarch nor king nor ruler set eyes on it save him only who guards it on the chapel. That, they say was the tradition kept since the Ark came to Ethiopia, so the chances of them showing the Ark to any Pope or Patriarch would be nil.

Also, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (which holds the Chapel) is not really a part of the RCC; the Ethiopian Catholic Church (a different body) is.

So, its not held by a Rite of the Universal Church.

Whats the probability God would of allowed it to fall into another except the Univeral Catholic ? 0.00000000000000? percent
What about the Holy Fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem or other miracles that are in the Eastern and Oriental Churches? Even if you do not believe in its authenticity (personally I don’t really care much about them), let’s say for a moment that they are true and are sent by God. Why would God perform such a miracle for, say, the Greeks but not to the Russians, or to Latins but not to the Syrians?

Perhaps because He has a purpose for doing so that we humans could not easily grasp.

Let’s say that the claims in Axum was true and that the Ark (or at least a copy of it) was there. Why would it be there? Who knows; God may have allowed them to have possession of it due to some (as of now yet undisclosed) plan of His.

I see your point.

Since most would believe a low likelihood that it is the actual Ark, given Axum’s remote location and non-Jewish roots, it might prove the ideal location to protect the original Ark … until the new Kingdom arrives.

I used to believe this the case … until the Church convinced me that Mary is the new Ark … and the original was taken back to heaven.

Still … I would like to see what’s inside that building structure in Ethiopia. To see, but not to touch. We know what once happened to a Hebrew layperson who innocently touched.
