When was the Catholic Church Founded?

In a scouting magazine I received yesterday, various religious awards are highlighted with a bit of information about each religion. The bit about the Roman Catholic Church says that it was founded in the 4th century. I thought it was Jesus that founded our church - around 33 AD. Why the gap of several hundred years?
