Before that, last great trip was Europe on the way back from India. Italy was really nice, and I want to go back and spend more time. I still regret missing that I was going to be in Italy on Easter and not planning a trip to Rome. Oh well, at least Zurich was nice. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about a lot of the people I met, but I still had some pleasant interactions with a few strangers.
Where did you stay and do in Zuerich? That’s where I lived for ten years. Beautiful city, horrible winter climate, so dreary!

I stayed near the airport to make it easier to catch my early morning flight. Technically, I think I was actually in a neighboring suburb of Zurich.

I did make a trip into the city, though. I saw the university, some of the Altstadt, and some of the non-touristy stuff when I got lost. I almost had Thai that night because I found myself in what seemed to be a small Thai/Vietnamese district. I eventually found my way back into the main part of town.

While I was there, it did get really cold and snowy one day. During the night I wandered the town, it actually rained a little, but I didn’t care. It was still beautiful.

Unfortunately, as I said, I was headed back from India, which was work related. I didn’t have a lot of time to spend in Europe, since I was needed back in the U.S. in a few days, and I was also getting homesick by that time, since I had been in India for a few months. I’m not sure I enjoyed Zurich as much as I could have.

You no doubt stayed in Kloten, which isn’t actually a suburb of Zuerich, but a small town only a few kilometers north. It’s the town where the airport is located. That’s actually where I lived, in Kloten. Since I no longer have a home there, I stay at the Hotel Welcome Inn, which is very close to the airport and has a shuttle to and from the airport. There’s also a Hotel Allegra, but I love the Welcome Inn.

Zuerich Old Town is very beautiful. It would have been nice if you’d had more time. Zuerich is very accessible by train, and shopping in the main train station alone is fun. There are many, many ethnic restaurants in Zuerich, all of them with great food. Zuerich is a lot nicer in the summer, though, and summers are warm but not oppressively hot. Lots of flowers in the summer, and the lake is gorgeous and so clean.

Tbe Swiss are very efficient and expect you to be very efficient, too, but once you get used to them, they are quite nice. (Took me some time to get used to living in Switzerland. Zuerich is very focused on business and finance; the Italian canton of Ticino, which has palm trees, is much better for enjoyment. There, I stay at the Hotel Parc Rovio and make it a point to go to Bellagio, Italy.)

Last big vacation was in May when I went to Orlando. Drove from my home in West Virginia to the Washington, D.C. area and took the Amtrak Auto Train to Florida. The Auto Train has special car carriers, and this allowed me to have my own van while I was in Florida, instead of renting.

I spent a day at Universal Studios, went to a baseball game, and went out swing dancing a couple evenings.

A major complication was that the wheelchair ramp / automatic door combo on my van broke down on my way to D.C. I had to operate it manually throughout my trip. Got it fixed when I got back home.

More recently, I’ve taken a few quick weekend trips. Last month, I went to a bluegrass music concert in Thomas, WV, featuring husband and wife duo Darin and Brooke Aldridge. Then a Christian rock concert earlier this month in Logan, Ohio, and finally up to Detroit for my 30 year high school reunion.
