When was this man healed?

In the story of Jesus healing a paralytic in Mark 2:1-12, at which point in time was the man healed? Was it at verse 5, when Jesus says, “Son, your sins are forgiven”, or was it at verse 11, where He definitively states, “I tell you, take your mat, get up, and go home?”

Was Jesus expecting the man to understand that the forgiveness of his sins would heal his physical body?

An interesting question.

Just my take on it.

First it is necessary that we recognize that in the OT times disease and other misfortunes were seen as direct punishment for sin. Therefore, this mans infirmity would have been seen in this light. He was crippled because he had sinned in some way.
Next we need to recognize that healing has two aspects, (which I think Christ was illustrating), The spiritual aspect, which would be the acceptance of God and Christ, and the forgiving of sin, and the physical aspect which would be his getting up and walking.

Jesus healed the man spiritually by forgiving his sins, but since this only antagonized the scribes and pharisees, Christ also removed the paralysis to show the forgiveness (healing) in a way they would understand.

So - The man was healed in the most meaningful way when his sins were forgiven. The bodily restoration was simply an outward manifestation of that forgiveness.

He was expecting the crowd to understand that His healing of the man’s physical ailment was done as a sign for all that He is exercising the power to forgive sin, a far more awesome power over a far graver evil than physical suffering.

He was healed both times the first time was the most important the** forgivness of sins**. But the people of that time not unlike us today wanted a “sign” of authority so he healed his physical ailment also.
And just a note not all infirmity is caused by sin some is for the Glory of God.
Sounds like a foreshadowing of reconcileation .

So was it the Sacraments Jesus was speaking about when he said:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. "
In John 14:12
Greater that walking on water, healing the sick, casting out deamons, changing water into
wine???
Those are natural signs of supernatural things to come.

A really interesting part of this story that’s often overlooked is verse 5 - on seeing “their” faith (the friends who went to the effort to bring the paralytic before Him) - He forgave and healed the man. We have in fact no evidence from the text that the man himself said or asked for anything. I find this a really powerful confirmation of the value of intercession and corporate faith.
