As a Catholic, what should our truly Catholic response be when we are informed that someone has passed away? Is there a traditional response we can offer, especially when the deceased person was a friend or family member of a person we know? :signofcross:

I ask this because I was watching the Vortex yesterday, and Michael Voris was mentioning the beauty of truly Catholic ways of speaking (“Our Lord” instead of the Lord, etc.), and he briefly alluded to “eternal rest…” as an appropriate response to being thusly informed. As a convert, I didn’t know what he was alluding to, but I figured that the Catholics here would know and be able to teach me how to respond.

Thanks! 🙂

“Eternal rest…” is a standard sort of prayer:

V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let the perpetual light shine upon them.

And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Though whether or not I would say that would depend on the circumstances. I’m more likely to say something like “I’m so sorry to hear that” and pray for the person privately.

Can’t say there is a “standard” Catholic response. The prayer mentioned above is a good one and very common.
Simply express sympathy in the most loving way possible, offer to pray for them and the family, maybe have a mass said for them.

Peace
James

My response has always been to have a Mass said in their memory.

How would I have a Mass said in their memory? I have never done that.

Call the parish office. I usually stop by and see what dates are available and just pick one. Normally one gives something (it’s about $5 here) but I don’t think that is required.

Peace
