The Second Vatican Council was almost 50 years ago. I was just wondering what the probability of having another ecumenical council in my lifetime would be (I’m 16). Also, when do you think the next one will be?

The rector of the cathedral once told me that there probably won’t be another ecumenical council for at least one hundred years. We’ve had Vatican I and Vatican II in a very short order, but the last Council before the First Vatican was Trent, more than four hundred years prior. One will come when one is needed, for the Holy Spirit of God guides the Body of Christ!

It’s not that important to be alive when one does happen. Don’t puff yourself up even if a new Council is called, because it would be spiritual prelest to do so. How we die is much more important than the period we live in. 👍

I know that the reason for Trent was for the Counter-Reformation, but why were Vatican I & II convened?

Depends too I guess if the Orthodox want unity sooner than later. With the Anglicans and other Protestant groups slowly coming into unity with the Church, if the Orthodox become serious about a union then an Ecumenical Council will be convened to hammer out the details of a united Church, as it was in the Council of Nicaea

I really hope it occurs in our lifetimes. Reunion would be such a blessing for all who are caught in the often painful area known as Orthodox Christianity in Communion with Rome.

Excellent question. In my not-so-few years, I’ve seen various explanations proffered. Some are logical and believable, while others are fanciful at best and just plain silly at worst. I’ve held my own position on the matter (which I am not going to expound upon at this time) for quite some years, but I’m curious, too, as to what might be suggested here.
