As soon as possible. 😉 The Cardinals will vote. A new pope is chosen when 2/3 of the Cardinals vote for the same man to become pope. The Vatican expects us to have a new pope before Easter (March 31). 🙂

The order for the college of cardinals to convene will be given tomorrow, and they’ll meet next week to pick a date for the start of the conclave…which will probably be between the 11th and the 15th. After that, a maximum of one vote on the first day, then four votes everyday - excluding “off” days at certain points if no Pope has been elected - until we have a new pontiff. Formally installed on the next convenient Sunday, which I think in this case will probably come after Easter.
