When would the souls go to where he/she belongs?

As far as I understand, the soul leaves the body at the time of death. He/she will go directly to where he/she belongs:
  • The righteous go straight to heaven,
  • The not so righteous (committed venial sins) go to purgatory to be purified
  • The bad ones, people who directly denies God will go straight to hell without a single chance of entering heaven.
But I found it confusing because at the second coming Jesus will judge the living and the dead. How about those who died earlier? I mean, when will the souls really go to heaven or to purgatory or to hell, “at the moment of death” or “at Jesus’ second coming”?

Please enlightnen me.

"1022 Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven-through a purification594 or immediately,595 – or immediate and everlasting damnation.596

At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.597"

"1038 The resurrection of all the dead, "of both the just and the unjust,“623 will precede the Last Judgment…”

“1039 In the presence of Christ, who is Truth itself, the truth of each man’s relationship with God will be laid bare.626 The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do during his earthly life:”

So the particular judgment at death will be a judgment of what we did in our life and its immediate effect on others. The last judgment, when Christ returns is going to be a judgment that also includes our effect on others, whether for good or bad, of all those effected since the time of our death to the second coming. So we will see the good or bad fruit of our lives in history.

Does this mean that at the Last Judgement all the souls in Hell will be released, judged and then sent back?

Souls, being non-physical, do not reside in a physical location. I think Hell is a state rather than a place; so they are in Hell wherever they are. Since they are reunited with their bodies at that point there must be a physical place to which they then go.

I’ll rephrase Nelka’s question. Does this mean that at the Last Judgement all the souls in Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory will be rejudged? It seems that the final judgment is just a formality…🤷

The Last Judgement is a confirmation of the Particular Judgement for those who had already died. The Last Judgement for those who are still alive when it comes of course is not a confirmation as that serves as Particular and Final in one. The Last Judgement is also when bodies and souls are reunited.

Why would a soul need to be judged twice?

I believe it, I just don’t understand it.
 
Also

The last judgement is when God’s justice and mercy will be made manifest. That is, we will understand why each person will be judged as he was. We will know the sins of others, nothing will be hidden.

So when you do wrong: God knows.
At the last judgement, so will I :eek:

Yes, it will matter, we will care. For it is in knowing the other that we will understand God’s just judgement and mercy.

JUDGMENT, PARTICULAR. The individual judgment of each human being immediately after death. It is a judgment in the sense that God irrevocably determines a person’s lot for eternity, depending on his or her co-operation with grace during the stay on earth.

JUDGMENT, GENERAL. The universal judgment of the human race at the final resurrection of the dead. It is expressed in all the creeds that affirm that Christ now “sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from where He shall come to judge the living and the dead,” i.e., the just and the wicked. This will be a social judgment because it will manifest to the world God’s justice in condemning sinners, and his mercy in those who are saved. It will also be a total judgment by revealing not only people’s moral conduct but all the accumulated blessings or injuries that resulted from each person’s good or evil deeds.
