It doesn’t seem like there is much in the way of Catholic apologetics being applied to the issues discussed in this “apologetics” forum. Questions and topics of discussion are generally met with several opinion pieces posted by various users. If true Catholic apologetics are to be engaged in we must align ourselves with the teachings of the Magisterium and craft our answers through the lens of its wisdom. The hierarchy of Catholic teaching has never been a democratic opinion poll.

This is an internet forum and is open to all who wish to politely participate. Since your first post here is so disdainful of others’ efforts, it can only be assumed that you think you can do better, so have at it. God bless your efforts.

I have to agree with Bob though, that if you have something of merit to offer then welcome to the trenches. :irish1:

It is not about whether I think I can do better or worse than anyone else. I’m just stating that personal opinion and apologetics are two very different things. On a typical posting in this forum there are a dozen or so replies dealing merely with opinion and hardly anyone ever refers to specific Church teaching.
In contrast the “Ask an Apologist” forum serves as a wonderful teaching tool simply because questions are answered solely from the perspective of Church teaching and are devoid of personal opinion.

You might have already guessed, but this forum would be better called the, “Angry Shouting Forum.”

I’m not Catholic, but I would agree with you that the posts here are usually just the opinion of the poster, and quite frequently an uninformed opinion at that.

Pointing that out to people is going to get you flamed though. And just by way of a heads up, saying people on this forums are mean or insulting to others is just going to bring all of that wrath down on you.

There are some great apologists on this site, but they don’t make up the majority of the people who post.

Well…maybe the apologist posts are devoid of personal opinion, but (no slight intended) sometimes contain personal but educated interpretation.

Sometimes magesterial teaching is crystal clear, and sometimes it is open to some manner of interpretation. There are good Catholic apologists and theologians who disagree on the meaning of magesterial instruction, and also area where there is no (none yet, anyway) instruction.

So…let’s not be too quick to discount the opinions of the unwashed masses…😉 and no pun intended.) Their opinions come form experience and their experiences provide not only some interesting thoughts and ideas, but a chance to perhaps clarify and perhaps simplify church teachings.

It pains me sometimes to read posts within threads where the poster assumes that everyone has read this document or that, or can even make heads or tails out of it if the did read it. Some of that stuff is heavy theological reading, and it hurts my brain to read it on occasion. 😉

If you’re looking for “just apologists”…well…some of are apologists in training. 😃

What do you expect for free entertainment?
What we apologists complain about is a consistent lack of quality in the people who have disdain for these forums and express it openly yet persist in coming here and reasserting the same old subjective believes and opinions of how Catholics ought to be.

There is an old saying “garbage in garbage out” or “you get out what you put in”. If non-Catholics who want to learn the faith or challenge the faith could be more objective, rational and refrain from circular arguments of the form “my bible does not tell me that” (over and over again) we might be able to improve the responses. As it is where there is nothing to get one’s teeth into we have to sometimes press on an emotional level to get to the real heart of the matter and discover the true agenda and nature of the persons who come to this forum for no apparent reason other than to be spoilers, trolls and to discredit and slander The Church.

In contrast the “Ask an Apologist” forum serves as a wonderful teaching tool simply because questions are answered solely from the perspective of Church teaching and are devoid of personal opinion.Well, the fact is that anyone who enters an online forum expecting to see nothing but facts enters with a misconception that will soon be disabused.

That’s one reason they are called “discussion forums”.
You might have already guessed, but this forum would be better called the, “Angry Shouting Forum.”
I disagree completely, and I think it’s disingenuous of you to portray it that way.

The vast majority of posters on this forum are charitable and respectful, and those who are not soon get dealt with by the forum Moderator. In fact I think that CAF is probably the best of the religious forums that I have experienced.
I’m not Catholic, but I would agree with you that the posts here are usually just the opinion of the poster, and quite frequently an uninformed opinion at that.
Okay…and that differs from your own posts exactly how? My point is that if you want authentic Catholic teaching, devoid of opinion, then you need to spend more time at the CA online Library instead of here on the forums. I would point out that in my experience, the level and rhetoric and “opinion” here at CAF is no worse, and in fact generally better than the same that I have encountered on the n-C forums that I no longer post on.
Pointing that out to people is going to get you flamed though. And just by way of a heads up, saying people on this forums are mean or insulting to others is just going to bring all of that wrath down on you.
Probably because one should never rudely offer such comments to someone in whose home one is a guest. 🤷
There are some great apologists on this site, but they don’t make up the majority of the people who post.
Again, how is that any different than all the n-C forums around? I don’t suppose it’s occurred to you that all these people (on both Catholic and n-C forums) never claim to be great apologists and are in fact here to learn even as you or anyone else is?

How is that wrong? If you can’t deal well with that aspect of forums then I suspect that they are not for you and you would be better off taking my earlier suggestion and/or doing your research on the Vatican website.

That hasn’t been my experience at all. I’ve found **most **of the posts responding to mine are terribly rude and condescending. Disagree all you want, but my opinion stands.
Okay…and that differs from your own posts exactly how?
Personal attacks are so very helpful in discussions like this, thank-you. When have I ever claimed to speak for the Church?
My point is that if you want authentic Catholic teaching, devoid of opinion, then you need to spend more time at the CA online instead of here on the forums.
I expect personal opinion. I also expect personal opinion to be labelled as such. Too often people are criticized on this site for not taking the time to learn what the Catholic Church really teaches, by people who don’t take the time to learn what the Catholic Church really teaches.

Well, I don’t know what forums you no longer post on, so I will have to take your word for it.

I can assure you that if I were the slightest bit unsure of a particular doctrine of the Catholic Church, I certainly would go to a reliable source, as opposed to an open forum. I would also make sure I got my facts straight before making a claim as to what the Church teaches.

of the posts responding to mine are terribly rude and condescending. Disagree all you want, but my opinion stands. And that would parallel my own experience on several n-C forums. So how does that make CAF somehow less?

Are you always so touchy? That wasn’t an attack, but an observation and question meant to get you to think about the things you said.

If I wasn’t clear then I’m sorry.

Lastly, where did I even infer such? I didn’t and I wouldn’t because I know you can’t. 🤷
I expect personal opinion. I also expect personal opinion to be labeled as such. Too often people are criticized on this site for not taking the time to learn what the Catholic Church really teaches, by people who don’t take the time to learn what the Catholic Church really teaches.
So…your issue is that everyone here doesn’t know all there is to know and are still learning their faith?

Would you like to be held to that same standard and if you were, have you considered how you might measure up under your own critical eye?

My point here is that you seem to be setting a standard that none of us can measure up to in online exchanges and I think it’s unrealistic at best.
Well, I don’t know what forums you no longer post on, so I will have to take your word for it.
🤷 My only point is that I could make the same claim you have about them, and it means exactly nothing at all. I have yet to see ANY forum that is different, regardless of subject.

In fact it is a great deal harder to get good info from n-Cs since they have no central authority to appeal to. Where a Catholic can hit Vatican.va to get good info, the same cannot be said for n-cs just by nature of their diverse divisions.

No one seems to have control of that so it means an awful lot of sources to peruse…

Again…I think you want to hold up a standard that no one can attain to.
I can assure you that if I were the slightest bit unsure of a particular doctrine of the Catholic Church, I certainly would go to a reliable source, as opposed to an open forum. I would also make sure I got my facts straight before making a claim as to what the Church teaches.
So… you’ll never see me recommending anything less, but people have to learn, and dogging out the people here at CAF for not being every one a little pope or Bible scholar is kinda silly since I don’t know anyone on any religious forum that can make good on that claim.:ehh:

I just think that you guys are decrying something that you yourselves…and none of us in fact…can measure up to and I don’t think it’s fair.

Besides, anyone here for any length of time will soon discover who the members are that actually know their faith and who does not. There’s plenty of good apologists on here, but they aren’t ALL the members here, and that shouldn’t be something griped about.

All of us Catholics are working to help each other to grow in the love of Christ and the knowledge of the faith.

I think you could cut 'em some slack since we’re all a work in progress.:yup:

Yawn and stretch. Silly me thinking I would find Catholic apologetics in an apologetics forum on a website called Catholic.com

Silly us for thinking you might actually, you know, be looking for apologetics rather than complaining that something doesn’t suit you.

The Internet is a big place—surely you’ll find what your looking for elsewhere if we somehow fail to meet your august standards here.

Alternately, you could show us how it’s done, no?

There’s not even an apologetics topic to this (your own) thread. It’s an opinion thread.

And you wanted to complain…🤷
