The Catholic Church condemns radical materialism: both laissez-faire, no holds barred, anything goes Capitalism; and Communism. (Karl Marx said there is no difference between Socialism and Communism so ponder that.) Both of these forms of radical materialism are combined in today’s China. Job one is to stop buying Chinese junk.
The Church has, throughout history, been a singular economic engine co-existent with her unitive transmission of the Gospel and faith praxis. This includes the Church’s organization and preservation of social networks; creating means of community-wide and trans-national communication and literacy; and building compounds that helped to fend off marauders. Monks rebuilt and spread agricultural practice and technology that collapsed after the fall of Rome. The Industrial Revolution was virtually started by Cistercians at Fontenay Abbey of St. Bernard’s founding in the Burgundy region of France by reviving the lost art of metallurgy, and devising a water-powered trip hammer to delink production from the hammer swing of a blacksmith.
The Jesuits and Franciscans brought missions that raised the dignity of the locals, taught trades and imparted literacy, and encouraged economic self-determination and freedom from pillaging. The Crusades or various incarnations thereto were generally spurred as much by the Muslim incursion into once-Christian trade routes as piety. The Battle of Lepanto was the turning point in recapturing sea dominance over the Ottoman Empire that enslaved Christians, pirated goods, and threatened Europe as a whole. Equity courts–fairness apart from written particulars of the law–and freedoms under the Magna Carta provided a balance to secular authority. Functions of socio-economic stabilization initiated by the Church were adopted by secular society.
This is not the case with laissez-faire “no rules” Capitalism and Communism, which were spawned without the principle of the overriding dignity of man made in God’s image and equality of souls. “The love of money is the root of all evil.” It is wildly naive to suggest any economic venture that is uprooted from God’s law of love of neighbor as linked to love of self for the love of God can be anything but toxic. There is no “humanitarianism” in any economic system delinked from God and it becomes the humanism, man as the highest measure of good, that led to the greatest genocide in human history, that of atheistic humanism of the twentieth century and following with the modern embrace of the soft genocide of abortion and depopulation promoted by national and world governments united with business tycoons like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, a fascist paradigm.
Tithing, the use of donated money, land and services to support Church functions and charities, has diminished mightily. Reviving this arm of Church influence demands that the Church itself be transparent and highly accountable as recent revelations show that groups antithetical to Church teaching are being funded. Accountability has been rare with 3 billion in hush-money to victims of clerical predation without any open oversight.
America is now a fascist country with the seizing of lands from poor African-Americans in Florida by the Democrat-led government through eminent domain only to pass it on to private development; this being approved by Supreme Court liberals. Fascism is the unholy bond between government and business versus the people. That means the Church must be neutralized as being a bulwark against such imbalance. This has played out in the viciously punitive enforcement of taxpayer-funded abortion and sterilization via government-mandated “health” insurance.
This is the administration that saw fit to give 70 billion to investment bankers whose deadly derivative market is still unregulated while withholding 7 billion of budgeted foreclosure aid to the poor in the “Hardest Hit” mortgage market. That’s government allied with business against the people who will then be expected to bail out any further gambling losses if the past is prologue. The “humanitarian” aid comes in the form of record food stamp disbursement to soften the inhuman economic enslavement of people knocked off the ladder of success in loss of equity and homes and job loss to radical materialist China.
May the Infant King of Kings stop the slaughter of innocents. May the Son of God raise the dignity of man by cleansing and renewing the Body of Christ and banish our self-indulgent self-destruction. May the Lord of Lords work out His plans to “prosper us and not to harm us” swiftly with His elegant solutions. Holy Angels and Saints of God, thank and praise the Most High for us and grant peace on Earth to men of good will. AMEN
