Where are the liberal Catholics on the web?

Where can I go on the web to dialogue with the pro-choice, pro-priestesses, inclusive-language-using Catholics? Are there any forums that they frequent? (It sure doesn’t seem to be here. J) I have been hearing about these people second-hand ever since my conversion but have yet to meet one that I can question. Supposedly the choice of our new pope was “controversial” and criticized. The news media found some people to quote but we know how they have a way of getting minority opinions. where on the web is all this criticism?

I really would like to chat with an anti-dogmatic “Catholic”, more out of curiosity than anything else.

You can go to Catholiculture.org’s web reviews and search for RED websites, meaning they are heretical, or are otherwise lack fidelity to Church teaching. However, those types tend not to have discussion boards or if they do, they are barren.

I’m not sure if it’s worth it.
 
Don’t know about the Web, but go to any Catholic organization- college, school, social services, hospital, etc, and you will find LOTS of their employees ready and willing to lie to you. 😃
 
Go to any non-religious website frequented by women (ie, fitness, health) and go to open chatter or water cooler or whatever the general discussion area is called, and start a topic related to the Catholic church. You will be bombarded with former and marginal or progressive Catholics who will share their opinions openly. One of my fitness forums was so virulent after the election of Pope Benedict that I quit visiting for a while.

Many of the posters didn’t understand the church’s teachings and their origins and so assumed they were based on misogyny and the founding church fathers’ desire to keep women from having any authority in the church. Many of the posters wrote they left the church because of its position regarding women. Believe me, these people are out there, they’re angry and they truly hate the RCC.

It was quite eye opening for me. It’s why I joined this forum, hoping to learn the way to defend the church to these women and to reach them and encourage them to really learn what the church teaches as opposed to what the church’s opponents say the church teaches. Unfortunately, this has not gone so well.

I’d like to hear from them too. I’m up for a good discussion. They are most likely lurking about and reluctant to come forward.

I consider myself a liberal Catholic, but have a hard time classifying such folk as you mention as liberal Catholics, more like anti-Catholic catholics with an axe to grind that will probably never be sharpened in their lifetime.They are like a group of the Lord’s sheep all tangled in the brambles and brush and missing out on the good sweet grass provided by the Lord. Some folks just get ulcers fighting for what they ain’t got and are missing out on the fun of being alive in God’s Kingdom.
 
In my experience you never find them on catholic forums.
At least I have never met any.

I always considered myself a more “liberal” catholic. But my experience also taught me to be careful with labels. I always considered myself a feminist, too, but the first time I read a feminist theological book, it knocked my socks off…

So, go figure…

yes, I am from Germany, I know how “critized” Ratzinger is. As I was reading Dominus Jesus years ago, it knocked my socks off, now 5 years later, I would say, right he is…it looks like too many groups try to teach the Catholic Church what to teach…

I am still struggling with a lot of the church’s teaching but I understand why they do it but I see it is a too narrow way for most people nowadays…or so far away from what they learn outside “catholic lessons”.

But we will see,
the only board I know you meet a little bit discussion is www.kath.de but you must be able to speak German…and it is mainly the sub-board where ex-catholics and protestants talk…

…it depends upon your definition of “liberal”… i have noticed there are hundereds of definitions…

… politically i would classify myself as liberal… theologically and philosophically i lean very heavily on the conservative side… orthodox i would say…

Or perhaps this is a stereotype of American catholics that isn’t quite realistic, i.e. people aren’t either (A) completely orthodox in all their beliefs or (B) adamantly pro-choice, pro-priestess, pro-inclusive language. There are some of those, but I think they are a much smaller minority than the media would have you believe.

Also I think a lot of the ones who passionately hold those positions aren’t really likely to be heavy internet users. Here’s a stereotype, but a lot of the really “progressive” Catholics are older, and older people are somewhat less likely to be into the Internet forum thing. Among younger “dissenters” you more often just find people who are poorly catechized and basically secular in their outlook, who don’t really have much of a serious intellectual or principled reason for their dissent. E.g. the people who would read The DaVinci Code as a scholarly criticism of the church.
 
There used to be one out there that I knew of…it was called: www.catholicsforkerry.com It has since been removed after the election…I was dissapointed to find out the creator and owner of the webite and forum was a brother Knight…They booted several of us off from there when we went to rebut their views on abortion, etc…I don’t know about any other sites out there, except some evangelical protestant sites that are extremely anti-Catholic and for the most part are pro-choice, pro-womens ordination, etc.

OK. What I mean by liberal: people in favor of
  1. **Sexuality acceptance **Legitimizing any sexual activity other than one man/one woman lifelong committed relationships open to procreation.
  2. **Church “reform” **Used by liberals as a label for rejecting apostolic authority.
  3. Priestesses
  4. Inclusive language – that is, sexually inclusive.
  5. Relativism – Catholicism is not particularly special as religions go.
  6. Liturgical freedom – Make it up as you go along. Anything is ok as long it’s new.
  7. Contraception
  8. Legalized abortion
They also tend to think that ending priestly celibacy will make a substantial, positive difference.

I’d say a lot of these ultra-Liberal catholics are legendary - or at least only part-time or part-lapsed Catholics.

There are anti-catholics - usually embittered part-catechised ex-catholics; and there are theologians, religious “experts”, and others on the fringes of the Church who have lost belief, but whose continued employment depends on retaining the Catholic label.

However when the BBC wanted someone to represent the supposedly vast number of Catholics opposed to Pope Benedict to interview, they had to go to Catholics for Choice in the US!
 
I myself avoid using the word liberal to discribe myself for the sound of the word makes me puke. Unless its classical liberalism I guess. As I am an orthodox catholic.
 
I consider myself a fairly middle of the road kinda guy; some folks here might consider me liberal but I don’t think that even I meet all of Racer X’s “8 deadly” criteria

As for why more “liberals” aren’t here?..well (besides the occasional vitriol to chase them away) most people tend to live in a ghetto of the likeminded
