Dear Apologist:
An online friend said that the old requirement to abstain from meat during Lent and on Fridays was because the fishermen lobbied for it. I’d heard this before, along with other apocryphal tales of promoting animal husbandry. Can you provide an accurate history of when the practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays and during Lent was instituted–and any secular considerations that may have influenced it? (I’ve already pointed out to him the spiritual concern of penance.)
