My 21 yo daughter is questioning her faith. The topic of homosexuality is one reason…she feels that homosexuals can’t help who they are, and that they have as much a right to a “family” as straight people. My apologetics is terrible, and I am struggling to find ways to present Church teaching to her in an enlightened way. She’s asked for scriptural support of Church teaching. Does anyone have chapters and verses? I’m sure that over the years I’ve seen scripture verses on this topic, but can’t find them now that I need them. How would any of you explain Church teaching on this topic to your adult kids?

Avoid any old testament ‘Abomination’ passages, as they aren’t as easy to defend - as in the same book both homosexuality and shellfish are called ‘abominations’. Try Romans 1:26-27 as well as 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. Hope this helps.

One more thing - you mention a “right to a family”.

A family, children, are a gift from God, not a “right”.

Perhaps the Catechism section on family, as well as the websites listed above will help shed some light.

Don’t forget to mention Romans 1:32. And tell her that Paul is only talking about specific religious cults and rituals, and that the context is as important as the message when interpretating ancient scripts. Paul isn’t talking about everyday life, and he isn’t talking about the average contemporary gay person or their sexual orientation. This is why the average gay person and their families are not worth of death. Also tell her that many experts say the greek terms “malakoi” and “arsenokoitai” have been mistranslated as homosexual, when it should read “male prostitution”, not homosexuality per se.

Yes, as I understand it many boys were abused in those days and were used as escorts. Many scholars have said the word translated in most Bibles as ‘homosexual’ likely refers to this.
I’m not a scholar, so I don’t know. Then again, I’m not a catholic and the OP asked for the churches view.

The Catholic churches teaching on this topic makes far more sense than non catholic. Prots tend to just say" the bible says it, so I believe it." however, there is a reasonable intelligent answer as to why the bible says no to homosexual behaviour.

God created them man and woman. The gift of sex between men and women is our gift of co creation. We are created in Gods image, and he gives us the gift of co creation, that occurs during the sexual act. It is why birth control is wrong too. LIFE occurs ( when it is Gods will) when a man and woman in obediance to God join together and become ONE in the sacrament of marriage. Marriage is union between the man, the woman, and God. It is a high calling. The 2 shall become 1 flesh- a child is that one flesh.

Homosexual sex is really mutual masterbation. It is closed to the gift of LIFE. I don’t mean it to sound harsh, like light penetrating thru the dark, is truth penetrating this culture of death that elevates the abnormal over the normal… when you are in the dark and someone turns on the light, at first, it hurts your eyes…some will read what I wrote and feel greatly offended and angry- those who live in the dark.

And I like what someone else said in this thread, about children are a gift, not a right.TRUTH.

Many biblical scholars do not believe that we have correctly interpreted the various writers correctly on this issue. The OT claims against homosexuality are more akin to issues of hospitality rather than the action itself.

As to the NT claims mostly from Paul, but present in a couple of other places as well, many believe that the real issue here is one of power. The male who submits is thought of as one giving up power and this is unacceptable. It is never the dominant person who is chastized. In the annals of Roman history, Julius Caesar was made sport of because of his apparent relationship with a foreign king. The king was not so made fun of, apparently because it was believed he was the dominant in the relationship. Caesar, who was supposed to be so manly, was seen an womanish and thus chastized.

The same can be said for the Greeks. It was a common practice for adult males to guide young men under the age of puberty. This included the practice of homosexual liasons. While we of course don’t accept such behavior, the child being below the age of majority, this was the very reason it was acceptable in Greek society. Once the boy reached puberty, such behavior was no longer allowed, the boy now being a man. Thus it would be unseemly for him to continue to submit.

What is written in letters and has been adopted into the canon is almost always heavily tied to the specific communities to which it is addressed, and not especially fruitful to be used as moral precepts for today. This was commonly understood by the people of that time. Paul certainly had no expectations that his letters to local churches would one day be considered scripture! To some degree, Paul’s moral remarks are simply a regurgitation of what was common in both Jewish and Roman/Hellenistic thought. That is not to say there is no relationship to now, but that we must be careful in ascribing such relationship.

Paul was incorrect in his assumption that the end of the world was close at hand and that Jesus would return during his lifetime. He did believe, it appears that love should be our motivating force, as an expression of our faith. That seems to be the universal key by which we should investigate and determine what is morally right or wrong today. He’s basic assumption that slavery was normative suggests that as well. Clearly, we don’t believe Paul on that point today, any more than we believe that Christ’s return is imminent. It is what as we now all acknowledge.

Actually, Acts 16 (unchastity-which is anything that isn’t sex in marriage, which is defined as the union of a man and a woman) is another part of Scripture which very clearly sets out what the Gentiles need to follow.

HERE ARE 2 0R 3 CHAPTERS AND VERSE;
Matt. 19:6 - after referring to God’s divine plan for man and woman, Jesus says a husband and wife become one flesh, which ultimately reflects God’s union with humanity through the Church. Homosexual unions pervert this divine truth of God’s love for and union with the human race.

Rom. 1:26 - also, when a woman lies with another women (lesbianism), this is unnatural and a perversion. God wants His children to be pure and holy as He is holy. Paul condemns all homosexual acts, whether committed by men or women.

Rom. 1:27 – Paul calls the practice of homosexuality shameless, unnatural and a perversity. It is contrary to the natural law, as it
YOU CAN GO TO SCRIPTURE CATHLOIC AND GET A LOT MORE, I HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU

Leviticus 18:22 states that if a man sleeps with another man as one lies with a woman, he shall be put to death.
BTW this verses is indirectly a reference to AIDS which shows that the origin of AIDS dates back to God creating people.

This verse and many others implies not to SLEEP with other men. There are also many bible verses which says that you should love other people.
In conclusion, the bible says that you can be gay but must be celibate if you are.

Rather silly

makes you wonder why Sodom was not plagued with aids, nor the other places…

OK shlomey, I agree, but it was a good thought you know, a link between the bible and AIDS. Nevertheless, the verse still implies that a person should not sleep with another man.

About the post and replies
I think whoever mentioned Leviticus 18:22 as death to people who have consummated homosexual sex, its Leviticus 20:13
You have to remember that the Bible was used to support slavery back in the 1800s, there are men with multiple wives in Scriptures
Romans 1 (especially 18-25) was not supposed to condemn homosexuals nor homosexuality. Those verses explain that the action frowned upon here is toward IDOLATRY. How is Romans 1 26-27 not disapproving idolatry or homosexual acts by HETEROSEXUAL people?

By Protestants, not the Catholic Church. (And I’m not trying to play the who-is-to-blame game; this is a point about how personal interpretation can go rampant.)

Jesus elevated marriage to a sacrament in the New Testament.

There is nothing wrong with being a homosexual. The problem is homosexual acts, which are condemned alongside fornication and adultery for obvious reasons. This can be seen in Jude 5-7, 2 Peter 2:4-6, 1 Timothy 1:10, etc.

Though all of this is a bit silly, since scripture is not the basis nor the only source of Christian doctrine.

If I were you, I would find websites which explain the Ancient Hebrew (or in the case of the New Testament Greek) on the so called ‘gay bashing’ verses and compare it to the Bibles written in English. I read from one of the websites that Leviticus 18:22 that the verses, to my recollection, was written as “Lay lyings with a man.”
I believe this a well detailed example of what I’m referring to

There are no gay bashing verses, so I don’t see what you are getting at.

I don’t have the time to learn ancient Hebrew, but Orthodox Jews (who do speak it, fluently) have the same views on sex as Roman Catholics do. Though this is irrelevant since the New Testament reflects the same view of sex as the Catholic Church has taught for ages, and that was written in Koine Greek.
