Hello, I found the print copy of the 1962 missal, and was very pleased. From the same website, I found the prayer book, “Blessed Be God”. I did not buy the prayer book yet though. Does anyone know anything about that pre-Vatican II book? Does it contain prayers to say every day?

Also, I am searching for the Breviary to pray. I recently became a traditionalist Catholic, and I want to know if it is acceptable to pray the current Breviary, such as the book “Christian Prayer”. If not, where can I find the pre-Vatican II breviary which was used for daily prayer? I would like a print copy, with English and Latin text side by side (it seems like I am searching for a lot, haha). Does anyone know where I can find this? Thank you so much, God bless you.

It is acceptable to pray from any breviary approved by Holy Mother Church.

If you prefer the traditional breviary like myself, you can get a new one from Baronius Press, but it costs around $365. Another option is to look for a used set on eBay, or you can use the free digital version on your computer or smartphone, over at Divinum Officium. The latter allows you to use the website or download a standalone version to your PC.

I have one that says copyright 1946-1952. It is called “I Pray the Mass” It is in black and red lettering with a leather cover, gilded edges. Do you think it is worth something?

There is a really nice plate in the front of Christ on the cross and red and black illustrations throughout. I love to collect old religious books, especially Catholic. I have a great icon collection.

That sounds really nice! Now, is it a breviary, or just a prayer book? Considering that many of these old Catholic books are very rare in English, if you were to sell yours on ebay or something, your book very well might be the only one online. Thus, I would assume you could get a nice price for it.

The 1960 breviary is not traditional by any means. It only dates back to 1910 and in fact had many departures from traditional practices of the Divine Office. The most traditional licit breviaries in existence are the pre- and post- Vatican II monastic breviaries. Their basic layout is 1500 years old and established some norms that were superseded in 1910.

One is of course free to use older editions. For that matter, the digital breviary at Divinum Officium has Tridentine and Pre-Tridentine monastic options. One advantage of 1960 is that it is the standard breviary for priests of the FSSP, and of others who celebrate or attend the Mass of St. John XXIII.

That would be very nice, though I would hate to part with it. I am a caregiver so it is something to consider since I am supporting two people on a low income… however… I am very grateful, as the Lord has provided. The Lord also brought me to the Catholic church because of this very cross, so in many ways, I am very blessed.

Thank you so much for your (name removed by moderator)ut!
