Where can i go to learn about angels and saints?

i tried the ccc but its so spread out, i tried the encylopedia on this site but i dont really know where to begin. im not a fan of wikipedia because theres so much incorrect material on there.

im looking for such information on hierarchy of the angels, why they are important. how they can influence prayer etc. and also info on the saints.

im sorry if i posed this in the wrong spot
 
Well…the Angelic Doctor is St. Thomas Aquinas for Catholics…and in fact, you will always find some quotes by him on most books on angels. Though you are quite right that secular books on angels tend to have misguided or inaccurate info.

A few things I remember about angels -from Aquinas- is that they know things fully and instantly about a subject -though ONLY God is all-knowing- angelic beings can know fully and instantly about a specific subject. They do not reason from point A to point B or use deduction or logic, like humans do. Of course, certain things are private to God alone, such as the time of the end of the world or who goes to Heaven, etc.

Also, angelic beings are unique and each one directly created by God for they do NOT reproduce. Therefore, each is a separate species. They have the same powers of the Free Will and Intellect, as we do, for both are spiritual creatures. Though, they seem to have placed their Wills freely under God, except for the ones who rebelled and were doomed. They were not forgiven for their transgression because unlike us, they had full and perfect knowledge and were not deceived.

Also, angels seem to be both messengers and message at once. Angels seem to have been assigned as protectors or ‘patrons’ of places and of times.

There are 9 choirs of angels:
Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.

I particularly like a Chaplet in honor of St. Michael:

Some people do not realize that angels are part of the Communion of Saints, along with the saints in Heaven, so it’s right to call Raphael, Michael and Gabriel by ‘Saint…’.

i just read the links to new advent, the 9 choirs of angels, are they all equal, only when
am i getting this right…each choir of angels has angels in them that deal with that specific qualities?

i also read about cherubim and seraphim. i read how they were used in the OT, but im still not sure if i have a basic grasp of their duties. so that leaves angels and archangels…are angels just a group of angels that do all of the above? are they each persons guardian angels?
 
Peter Kreeft has a book called Angels and Demons (no, not the Dan Brown one) which you might find interesting. He goes into some detail about things like the hierarchies of angels. There are some highlights on his website.

i def want that book. i want to check out all the books everyone listed.

One thing that helps me keep them all straight in my head is to call them angelic beings rather than angels when talking about the different choirs. However, if I’m referring to all of them -as opposed to humans, for example- then I may call them simply angels.

That is how we call them, because it is the choir closest to us, with whom we have more contact…including the guardian angels. Makes sense, right?

And, I’m not completely certain of some things, for example, some say that Michael is a seraphic prince and at the same time an archangel…I’m not sure about this though. 🤷

However, I DO want to make friends with him! He battles the evil one and some say he escorts us at the moment of death. He is a warrior and protector. Though, Raphael is supposed to be the healer and exorcist -as in the Book of Tobias.

I LOVE angelic beings! And animals! I guess ALL creatures remind me in some way of our Creator 😉
I find interesting that the same heresies that are common about Jesus, are common about mankind. If we think about it, by angelism refuting our ‘animal-like’ nature [bodies] and by animalism refuting our angel-like nature [spirits] it is somewhat similar as the heresies refuting Jesus being fully God AND fully Man -the Incarnation. I guess the evil one keeps trying the same old thing in many different ways! :rolleyes:
