Can a priest conduct Mass anywhere? For example can we celebrate mass in a hotel conference room? One of our guest is a priest and we may not be able to go to church Sunday so was wondering if we can celebrate mass at the hotel.

I believe he can if he chooses to and brings everything else that is necessary.

I have had masses celebrated in basements and student unions out of need. Mass can be celebrated in places outside a church building.

with permission from the local bishop, for a good reason. There should be no reason a priest on vacation should not be able to find a nearby church, who would probably be thrilled to have help with Sunday Mass.

You have to get permission from the local bishop? That sounds rather cumbersome. We will be at a remote location (no convenient location/time) and would like to celebrate Mass as a private event.

If one wants to get all technical about it, the priest needs permission from both his own ordinary and the bishop of any locale where he celebrates. But I would think that this is something which is generally offerred in spirit by bishops without a pastor having to make formal requests. It is just a matter of the priest using prudence. So I wouldn’t worry about it. If you want Mass and the priest will be with you, just ask and allow him to take care of it however he sees fit.

Canon Law:

THE TIME AND PLACE OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST

Can. 931 The celebration and distribution of the Eucharist can be done at any day and hour except those which the liturgical norms exclude.

Can. 932 §1. The eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise; in such a case the celebration must be done in a decent place.

§2. The eucharistic sacrifice must be carried out on a dedicated or blessed altar; outside a sacred place a suitable table can be used, always with a cloth and a corporal.

Can. 933 For a just cause and with the express permission of the local ordinary, a priest is permitted to celebrate the Eucharist in the place of worship of some Church or ecclesial community which does not have full communion with the Catholic Church so long as there is no scandal.

Do you mean the word “mass” or what goes on there? The word comes from the phrase in latin “ite missa est” at the end of mass which we translate as ‘go you are sent forth’. In English missa became mass. In the old missals that we used to use that phrase was translated as ‘go, the mass is ended’ which wasn’t the original meaning and the response ‘deo gratias’ often made me think thank God, now I can go home and get out of these shoes.
Of course, the real significance of the mass is that, through the action of the priest, Jesus makes present for us, or applies to us, the grace of the sacrifice of His death on the cross and then He gives us His body and blood as food and drink. We are worshipping the Father with Jesus as members of His body on earth. In the Mass, first we praise God, then repent of our sins, listen to His word from the old and the new testaments, hear the readings explained and applied to our lives, join with the whole church on earth and in heaven as the priest says the words Jesus said at the last supper which changes the bread and wine into Himself whom we receive. This is our “altar call”. When we go up to communion and say Amen we are saying I believe this is Jesus, I accept Him as my savior, I would stake my life on it!
There is a really good book by Scott Hahn called The Lamb’s Supper that shows how the mass parallels the worship of God in heaven shown in the book of Revelations.
I hope this helps. It’s a long answer to a short question.

a simple phone call is not very cumbersome, the priest has probably already handled the situation, did you ask him
