Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven (2 Kings 2:11)

yet Jesus said 'And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven" (John 3:13)

yet Elijah was there at the Transfiguration (I forget verse sorry).

So what are the speculations as to what happened to him?

Speculation?

He was in the ‘bosom of Abraham’, with the rest of the righteous who were awaiting the resurrection of Jesus, so that the gates of Heaven were opened and they could enter…!

Went into Eternity with his natural body, a very rare privilege, indeed!

ICXC NIKA!

Some believe that Elijah was translated to some earthly paradise and that he will return to be one of the two witnesses spoken of in Revelation 11:3-12, who will prophesy in the time of the Antichrist, will be martyred, resurrected, and assumed into heaven, just before Christ’s Second.

I have heard 2 good explanations for why Moses and Elijah were at the Mount of Transfiguration with Christ.
  1. Moses = LAW, Elijah = PROPHETS and they both are fulfilled in CHRIST.
  2. Moses represents the dead in Christ rising first at his Second Coming while Elijah represents those translated at that time. read this one at an Adventist website.
Where does this leave Enoch? Per Jewish mythology, Enoch resides as the eternal recorder of all mankind’s deeds and is known as the Angel Metatron.

Enoch did the same thing too ( I think).

I wonder how they are in Heaven in an earthly body, Im sure they would stand out, as everyone else is spirit form…weird, but interesting, I think this is one of those things we just cant know until we get there.

Could Elijah have gone to and been granted the honor of being allowed into the Garden of Eden?

I always thought that maybe Elijah and Enoch resided just outside the gates of Heaven and will come back as the two witnesses which are spoken of in Revelation?

Who knows? For that matter where is Melchizedek? The scriptures say he had no mother or father and was a priest forever.

I do think that Elijah and Enoch hint of the truthfulness of the Assumption of Mary.

The Haydock Commentary considers that “heaven” could mean some unknown place on earth or in the skies, or indeed the bosom of Abraham.
Heaven. By heaven here is meant, the air, the lowest of the heavenly regions, (Ch). through which he was carried by the ministry of angels, who directed the storm, (H.) to the place designed for him. — It is generally supposed to be Paradise, (C.) whither Henoch had been translated. H. — They are still living, (C.) and must come again, to invite all to repent. After which they will die martyrs, in the persecution of Antichrist. H. — See S. Aug. de Gen. ad lit. ix. 6. et Apoc. xi. W. — Eccli. xlviii. 10. M. — They are a proof of a future resurrection. C. — To decide where the paradise which they inhabit, (H.) is situated. would be rash. S. Chrys. hom. 21. in Gen. &c. Some suppose it is still in some unknown region of the earth: others place it above the sky, (M.) or in the bosom of Abraham. C. — The Jews (ap. Munster) assert that Elias penetrated the sphere of fire, where his body was consumed. Vat. — The earthly paradise is very probably no longer existing, in its ancient luxuriant state. H. — It may now be covered with the waters of the Persian Gulf. Worthington.

There are two ways to consider this:
  1. That Elijah didn’t “ascend,” but was “assumed.” That is to say, he didn’t rise by his own power, like Christ, but was taken up by the power of God, like Mary.
or
  1. That Elijah didn’t ascend to “heaven,” but rather went to that place that all holy souls before Christ went to: the bosom of Abraham.

Which Heaven? The abode of God? The stratosphere? Could be, just like Moses, that God took Elijah because he knew if he died in Israel, the Jews might be tempted to build a monument and adore, worship, glorify it, etc. Again, same as Moses. It is appointed unto man once to die.

Enoch…same thing. Just says God took him. Where? I know 1 AND 2 Enoch exist but are those the handed down words of Enoch himself all the way until 200 BC when it was supposedly written?

Just saying.

Yes, I just read this in Ven. Mary of Agreda’s Mystical City of God, a work about the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has the highest approbation of several popes.
