Where did Islam come up with the term; Religion of peace and tolerance?

Could be that I’ve missed the ayat’s that say to live in peace with the disbeliveers, and to be tolerant of non Muslims, but, I can’t seem to find an aya that says for muslims to live in peace with non muslims. Nor, could I find an aya that says to respect what non muslims believe.

Interestingly, I could only find the word peace 58 times in the quran. BUT, I couldn’t find the word tolerance anywhere in the quran (or hadith)

Are there any ayat’s that say to live in peace with non muslims…and not followed by…don’t trust non muslims?

I think it’s a form of takkiya. Within the Muslim moral universe, the concept of “takiyya”, which is religiously-sanctioned deception to protect or promote Islam, is not only moral, it is admirable because it comes from the Quran and experiences of Muhammad himself.

The deception is easy to perpetuate because the Arabic word “Salaam” (peace) sounds similar to non-Arabic speakers to Islam (submission). Islam means submission, not peace.

Quite correct. “Lying for Allah” is not merely condoned, it is often required in order to convert some who are resistant or concerned about the demands Islam makes on people.

This duplicity infects everything in Islam. It creates the bizarre mental state that leads the more radical elements to even greater acts of violence by dulling their conscience.

Well we are not practical people of Quran. Otherwise Muslims will be the Superb. But I think other religion use the same tactics from Quran on Muslims.

This is the covenant Muslims have with Christians till the Last Day:
*
This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by God I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them.
Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.
No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.
Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.
No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.
The Muslims are to fight for them.
If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.
Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.
No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day.*

60:8

I found this:
According to tradition, and evident from indirect information, the Fathers of the Monastery requested the protection of Mohammed himself, who saw the Christians as brothers in faith. Apparently, the request was favorably accepted and the so called ahtiname, or “immunity covenant” by Mohammed instructed his followers to protect the monks of the Sinai. Though this document has been a matter of controversy, it is doubtful that the monastery could have survived without the protection afforded by Mohammed and his successors.

According to the Charter of Privileges, a document in the possession of the monastery purportedly signed by Muhammad himself, Muhammed gave his protection to the monastery after it granted, at some point, political asylum to Muhammed from his enemies. A Fatimid mosque was built within the walls of the monastery, but has never been used since it is not correctly oriented towards Mecca.

It doesn’t strike me as odd Mohammed might offer to protect a site associated with Moses during Islams spread into Egypt which was actually after Mohammed died so that makes me question teh charters authenticity. I have read Mohammeds interactions with Christians were failrly limited in his own life as there were not as many in Arabia as there were Jews. Most of the Christians may not have been Christian as we accept them, like Kadijas uncle Waraqa who was a Nestorian that did not accept the divinity of Jesus, or they were monks that practiced non-violent solitude and asceticism and were of no threat to Islam by faith or in number.

Even if the charter is valid it is not exactly the current practice nor has it been for centuries. The many pacts Mohammed made with the Jews of Medina were been broken and the Qur’an is more clear with respect to the treatment of believers and non-belivers that contradict Sister Amy’s 60:8 reference. I would hazrad a guess that her reference is much earlier in the 23 yr revelation period than the later more intolerant verses such as 9:29.

How then does that Charter comport with The Pact of Umar that put severe restrictions on the dhimmi under Muslim rule or are the conditions Umar set in accordance with the Charter in your view?

We keep reading posts, from muslims, quotes to prove how peaceful islam is (gee, while not one of their clerics call for a stop to the killing and torture of infidels worldwide! - but will kill over cartoons and movies - go figure?!).

Well, the koran has peaceful passages in it - but what you won’t hear from the muslims is that those passages were abrogated by the violent (Medina) passages. Just as Bush quoted a more peaceful passage - he should have read the next line or two:
jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/2005/10/008625print.html
Bush again referred to Qur’an 5:32, “which states that killing an innocent human being is like killing all of humanity, and saving the life of one person is like saving all of humanity,” indicating that he still hasn’t considered the implications of the fact that jihadists contend that no Americans or Israelis are innocent, and thus the verse doesn’t apply to their actions. Nor did the President apparently read on to Qur’an 5:33, which stipulates that “the punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter” – a mandate for mayhem that jihadists have skillfully deployed the world over, and an indication that Bush’s reading of 5:32 may be a trifle superficial. Bush has not confronted the deep roots that the jihad ideology has within both Islamic tradition and the contemporary Islamic world. This could lead and has led to policy misjudgments.

Don’t be fooled by the peaceful passages. Many a muslim will also pull them out if they fear for themselves - they also lie for that reason too. They wouldn’t have to worry if their clerics would gather together and stop the slaughter, intolerance, and hatred of infidels worldwide. Stop this inane thinking that they have to force sharia law on people even in other lands - a barbaric set of laws that they practice in lands wherever they migrate to that are totally against the infidel.

I should add that peaceful passages are also told to us quite often when muslims are doing da’wa.
