Where did Jesus come from?

In a discussion the other day, a friend and I ended up at an impasse over where Jesus physically came from.

I said that Jesus came from Mary’s egg that the Holy Spirit inseminated when he “came upon her” while she said that the Holy Spirit implanted a fully formed embryo into Mary.

The true problem comes with our beliefs about Jesus. If he was “fully man” then wouldn’t he have to had to come from Mary’s egg? This also gives yet another reason for Mary to have been immaculately conceived since the entirety of a woman’s eggs are formed by birth.

My friend doesn’t see a need for Jesus to have come from Mary except to have been carried to term and born in order for Jesus to have been fully man.

I don’t believe Mary was just a vessel, that the Holy Spirit implanted all the chromosomes in Mary and she just brought them to term. Bible doesn’t say anything about Mary being a surrogate mother.

Just to be certain, Jesus did not originate from anywhere, as He was, is and will always be. However, if by “physically” you mean His human flesh and blood, than Scot Hahn has an outstanding CD on Mary explaining Her role from the new Eve to the new Ark of the Covenant as described in the book of Revelations. To include an indepth explanation of the “shadow of the Most High” which both hoovered over the Isreallites during their 40 years in the desert and the only other time it is mentioned in the bible is when it comes over Mary. Its supposed to be miraculous. Perhaps God caused some form of parthenogenesis to occur in the Virgin Jesus is the true son of Mary, as Jesus had to be of the line of Judah as a son of David to be the King Messiah. Jesus is called the fruit of Mary’s womb in Luke’s Gospel by Elizabeth who was speaking with the Holy Spirit. So Jesus was really the son of Mary. Or should we suppose Jesus had no belly button if He was not really the fruit of her womb?

Jesus had to be a descendant of Adam to redeem all the children of Adam. Thus He had to derive His humanity from Mary. Only in that way could He be our brother.

Your friend is caught in a trap that has caught many people over the centuries - the inability to get the mind around the idea that Jesus was Fully Human and Fully Divine, and therefore to hedge on one or the other.

Son of God, Son of Mary - only begotten of the Father, incarnate of the Virgin - this is the essential truth of our faith. Yes, it does matter that He did not spring from the head of Zeus or appear out of a cloud or a wave. John7 is correct - Mary was not a surrogate mother. Many would like to believe that she was, so they can dismiss all the attention Catholics and Orthodox pay to her as excessive. It was to counter this error that the Councill of Ephesus decreed that it was right to call her Theotokos - Mother-of-God.
