Where did Lent come from?

I would like to know the history of Lent. Where did fasting from meat come from? Where in history does Lent begin? I found this web site claiming to have the truth reguarding the history but I don’t trust a source I don’t know. I trust you will help me with this. Thank you and God Bless!
