Where did modern Fundamentalism originate?

I’m trying to find out where the Fundamentalist ideology, especially the Rapture stuff comes from. I understand it is really not much more than 100 years old, but I am looking for details.

Karl Keating gives an overview of the beginnings of Protestant Fundamentalism in his book, Catholicism and Fundamentalism. I recommend that book as a place to start.
