According to all scientific knowledge humans evolved several hundred thousand years ago from pre-human ancestors. There is no evidence to support the claim that Adam and Eve as described in the Book of Genesis ever actually existed. If we accept that they did not exist, then where did original sin come from?

As a side note, this is not meant to be a question about creationism/evolution. I am asking about original sin, so please stick to that topic in accordance with the ban on evolution threads. Thanks!

the CC says A and E were real people. if you go with theistic evolution, at some point God gives them an immortal soul. and free choice.

their choice to disobey and to gain knowledge of good and evil is OS.

I guess

This is an attempt to clarify the understanding of what original sin is it terms commensurate with the idea that A&E were symbolic at best. That likely means that “original sin” as well is symbolic, but of what?

Here’s what makes sense to me: While there is entropy as far as the physical aspect of what is is concerned, matter seems to be organized in increasingly complex patterns which in the three kingdoms, mineral, vegetable, and animal, have attributes that incorporate greater and greater freedom of movement in space, yeilding a commensurate ability to increase choice and ability. We belive, being homocentric, that this movement has reached its peak in mankind. And indeed, so far, not knowing what else inhabits the vasteness of the cosmos at any vibratory level, it seems to hold, at least for now.

But at each differentiation in the kingdoms, with some dimensional overlaps, a fulcrum is passed that moves from, but includes the mineral, as the vegetable kingdom, and then moves past another fulcrum, which includes the vegetable and the mineral, as the animal. At this point awareness as instinct is introduced at the point near the next fulcrum.

So in the scenario I envision, there came a point where matter was organized well enough to accomodate the next step in awareness, and that is the subject/object mode that we ordinarily enjoy. That subject/object awareness (s/o) was a shift away from the innocence of instinct. It was and is the knowledge of good and evil, but more generally, the ability to distinguish opposits and contrasts, particualy as applied to self as appearing to be a discreet individual.

Now somewhere just after this ability appeared as humans, some few of them discovered something vital and crucial in terms of integrity, however one might wish to qualify it. They discovered that the s/o part has another part behind it. That part appeared to be blank, and yet is the substrate of everything expereincable.

So these same folks became aware that in thier own species, us, there had been a shift. That shift sepearted the sense of self from the reality of the wholeness of the interwoven world, no part of which could exist without all of the others. It was, and is, in fact, a seamless whole. The part behind the s/o understood that, and wasn’t, isn’t seperate from it. But the ordinary operational mode, the s/o part, necessary for all the material advntages and mental advantges, couldn’t see that because its job is to separate and devide as finely as possible in ordeer to gain the advantages ffered by difference. So there are two parts, one invested in difference and matter, the other with wholeness and being.

So it was seen by the few that, in order to be complete, and not unbalanced relative to the wholeness of the world, men and women could learn to see this other part. but they had a problem. In order to not be seen as weird and insane, they made up a story, many stories, depending on who discovered this other part and where, were made up to ease people int the understanding of who and what they really are behind the appearance of their person. And so religions were born, and the sun became a symbol of God, because it was the source of light, as was the part of the mind invisible to the s/o awareness we so readily use we don’t see past it. This part, the s/o one, came to be called “the adeversary” because it had to be overcome to see the invisible part.

And so it came to be that the people who accomplished seeing both parts and intigrated them came to have a special title. But in most cases, the cultures that knew of this ability to transcend and intigrate told stories about a hero who was conceived in purity, was precocious and perceptive, didn’t accept the appearnce of things as reality, who is perceived therefor as a threat, is killed, and returns to reveal that his.her death was only in appearance. So the story paralled the steps needed to see within oneslef and discover that part that is not known to be to the ordinary “waking” mind, which is why ordinary folks are said to be “asleep” by sages, even the ones walking around doing incredible things in ignorance of their other part. Those who didn’t or wouldn’t do the work to find this out about themselves always have a nagging feeling of separation, sometimes hellish. And those who did the work and found out what was always under their nose, they have an unasailable sense of unity. They know from the inside why there are the Great Commandments and the Golden Rules. It is very siimplistically put, but doesn’t it sound familiar?

Or, God did it.

Scientific “knowledge” about the idea of evolution is really quite sketchy and based on big assumptions, but that’s besides the point. Even if evolution is true, that’s no reason to disbelieve in the existence of A&E. Even if they did evolve from monkeys, the first human parents had to exist for the rest of us to come later 😛

Adam and Eve did exist just not in the way the Bible said they did.

What I think happened, avoiding talking bout evolution, God at some time in the history of the earth put a soul on two human beings and they became Adam and Eve, they sinned and gave original sin to all their offspring.

If Adam and Eve did not exist, then original sin did not exist (since they did not commit it), therefore there is no original sin.

If you believe original sin does not exist, please visit a local prison and talk to some of the inmates.

How do they demonstrate original sin any more than anyone else? They certainly sinned as adults, but they were just as pure as any other baby when they were born.

Jesus is refered to as a second Adam in the NT. Is he a “second Adam” based on a fictitious person?

God, out of love, created Adam as the founder of a species so unique that it is peerless. The uniqueness of a human person is divinely revealed in the first three chapters of Genesis. We learn, not how our blood and guts were assembled; rather, we learn that our nature is an unification of the material domain of earth and the spiritual domain of God. This beautiful nature of Adam, both soul and body, was created in harmony which enabled Adam to walk with God in the harmony of friendship.

Our spiritual soul is independent of the limits of the scientific material world. By “independent” I mean that we are created beyond the material/physical world, in that we are in the image of God. Being in the image of God, we have the possibility of sharing in His life through knowledge and love.

Knowing the reality of Adam before the Fall assures us, as his descendents, that we have his same nature and thus we are called to the presence of the Beatific Vision.

Knowing that there was only one Original Sin by the original founder of humanity assures us that the effects of that sin are no more or no less than the teachings of Catholicism. This is important because then we can understand why our own human nature is no longer in perfect harmony and why we need Jesus Christ in our lives.

Adam and Eve are metaphoric. Original Sin is also metaphoric, and even more so the A and E, if degrees of metaphoricity are possible.

Original Sin is a metaphor for the human condition.

Surely a person who believes that Adam and Eve were metaphors, would also believe that Original Sin is also a metaphor.

And that sin itself is a metaphor for separation from God. And that ‘separation’ is itself a metaphor. Perhaps God is also a metaphor.

Although there may be no scientific evidence proving the existence of Adam and Eve, the Church, the Bible, and the Catachism all teach that they were, in fact, the very first people, created by God in His image. In this way, humans really are like God, but were tempted into thinking they could be gods without God (spiritual schizophrenia). Before they broke God’s law and ate of the tree of good and evil, they only knew God (good). Having knowledge of both implies one must choose God or not God. An act of the will.

I guess that the reason you ask about it, and why I probably may not understand the question, is because your belief is through empirical evidence while mine is through Faith. So by attempting to answer your questions, we might not be able to help very much. But you may receive understanding if you pray for the gift of faith, and if I pray for this as well. :byzsoc:

I am a scientist (a biochemist), and i agree that genetic monogenism is excluded by science, with virtual certainty. However, I am also a Catholic faithful to the teachings of the Church, and think there must be a way that theological (or metaphysical) monogenism of the human race is still possible. And indeed, this is the case. I do not believe that Adam and Eve are symbolic.

Here is an old post of mine that summarizes the issue:

Since this is a philosophy forum, those, who know philosophy better than I do, can philosophically reason that there is only one possible God Who is the supreme, transcendent Pure Spirit without the restrictions of the material scientific domain.
Humans as creatures are not equal to God so they are not able to do as God does and therefore, they cannot know as the Creator knows. If humans did know as God knows, they would then be able not only to create out of nothing but also to sustain creation.

The philosophers who accept God as believable can also accept the fact that humans do not know everything which happened in every nook and cranny during the period of pre-human history. However, the fact that the peerless human species exists uniquely among the creatures of God’s creation is reason to believe that there is a peerless, unique single couple who founded humanity just as God divinely revealed.

I’m pretty sure the church teaches Adam and Eve are real people not metaphors. The creation account could be considered that but Adam and Eve were real people.

👍 Agreed.
