Where did souls go before Jesus was crucified?

Before Jesus descended into Hell, is that where all souls went? (to Hell)? As it is said, no one goes to the Father except through the Son.

If this is true, then why would good and faithful souls go there?

We have to understand that the word that is traditionally translated as “hell” can actually refer to a number of different concepts. The theological term that is usually used here to refer to the place where the just waited for the gates of heaven to be opened is “Limbo of the Fathers.” This is as opposed to the Christian concept of hell which is a place eternally separated from God, a place of torment. So, those who died before Jesus was crucified either went to hell (the Christian concept) or to the Limbo of the Fathers. When Jesus descended to the dead he led those who were in the Limbo of the Fathers out and brought them to heaven.

i find this reason enough to give praise for being born in this time after Jesus’ First Coming. How wonderful it is to be able to go to Heaven if i am pure enough rather than wait in Limbo! Though of course this is all figured in when you endure personal judgment, so are all the other gifts we’ve been given and are we not called to give thanks for those corporal and spiritual gifts?

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich relates what Deacon Ed said above about Jesus descending to free those souls. And she also relates that when John the Baptist died, he went to Limbo (since he was found among the worthy) and told all there of the progress the Savior was making on earth. So it would seem those in Limbo were not aware of what was happening on earth but from what i read they were in a state of general peace, not any pain.

Also when Jesus descended, He did go into actual Hell, but only to chain up demons. Those demons were slowly again released to tempt and torment mankind over time. This is likely the thousand year reign the Book of Revelations mentions, the reign occurring while these demons were chained up. After the thousand year reign, those demons were freed a couple more each year and continue to tempt and torment us to this day.
