Where did the idea of fasting on bread and water come from?

I have fond memories growing up fasting on bread and water. It was something we did as a family sometimes. This idea of a fast being two half meals and a full meal is relatively new to me.

I just find the bread and water fast to be easier in some ways than figuring out 2 half meals and a full meal is. With the bread fast you don’t have to worry about any of that and just eat it as needed. Plus it frees you for a day from cooking and preparing food.

Interesting. Yes, some of the older Catholics miss the 40 days of fasting but they can still do it if they wish.

Many people would suffer medically on bread and water only.

Me for one. The water part is fine, but bread would be disaster for me. 🙂

Back when I was young & Protestant, our pastor would occasionally call for a 3-day fast - water only. It was surprisingly easy - after the first day. Eating nothing is easier for me than eating just a little.

It seems to me I read where a prophet in the old testament lived on bread and water. And there is a receipe for making this bread … it’s name is Ezekiel bread.

Just google it or search for in on CAF.
