Where did the practice of not eating meat on Lenten Fridays come from?

I have recently been questioned from one of my friends about why we don’t eat meat on Friday. Obviously, the main reason is “B-Cuz the church said so”, but he is wondering where this practice came from, originally. Thanks in advance.
