Where did Veronica come from?

The Sixth Station (Veronica wipes the face of Jesus) has for years been my favorite. I especially ‘enjoy’ when I get to the fourth of the Sorrowful Mysteries, because I think of Veronica, and the wonderful image that is instilled from that time.

A few days ago, a woman asked me ‘where was that scripturally’. My answer, was that OF COURSE it is in the Bible. Unfortunately, my Palm Pilot was malfunctioning, and I wasn’t able to pull up my Scriptural Rosary as quickly as I wanted, and I promised to get back to her.

Using a regular bible, I looked in all four of the Gospels, and, shucks 😊 there is NO mention of Veronica.

So, where did this come from? Why do we talk of Veronica?

I recently listened to a radio show about the Shroud of Turin, and a cloth (whose name I can’t spell) that each had blood type AB (from the Christ). They went on to say that the veil that was of Veronica no longer contained the image - the explained this was because it had nothing to do with the Resurrection - but it exists.

Where did this tradition come from? Is there some mention of Veronica in the epistles?

Personally, it will remain my favorite station, but I do love it when I can point to someone ‘there it is’ in the Bible.

Some say the name ‘Veronica’ comes from Latin ‘Vere’ = really, truely, correctly, and Greek ‘ikon’ = image.
Street Latin was a rich interweaving of Greek and Latin forms, both of substantives, and grammar.
So ‘vere ikon’ became ‘vereicona’, then the sounds became jumbled to ‘veronica’.
Basicaly, the true image on the towel became the name of the saint.
