Where did you go on your Honeymoon?

No where. We were poor and DH had just started a job, so he had to go to work on Monday. We actually have NEVER gone on a trip together alone (other than a drive to New Hampshire last year for DH’s company. He had to pick something up and drive it home the next day so I went along for the ride).

Soooo, there is rumor that DH is getting a big promotion within the next year and if he does this will be a priority. We need to just do it. Man, the hard part will be agreeing on a place to go. DH wants to go to Alaska, I want the beach.
I will say a prayer that the promotion comes through, and that you get your trip. BTW - Alaska is incredible (though I would wait until spring or summer, though!) You’d at least have water, if not a “beach”, as such.

My husband and I went on a week-long Caribbean cruise, which his parents paid for (his mom is a travel agent). It was amazing! I’d been on a couple of cruises with his family prior to that, but this time we were able to do what we wanted (or not), and not worry about keeping others entertained.

I would not change anything about our honeymoon. It was perfect! And I hope someday we can do it again as a “second honeymoon.”

I do think a honeymoon is important. For DH and I, it was the first time we’d really been alone together, so it was a wonderful opportunity for us to just spend time together alone, sort of decompress after the chaos of the wedding, and rest up before the chaos of transporting our lives from central IL to central FL.

We spent the first night of our honeymoon at a local hotel near the beach. We attended Mass at the Mission on Sunday morning then drove to Las Vegas. We spent one night at Ceasar’s Palace (which back then was one of the more extravagant hotels.)

Then we did something more original and a LOT more rustic. We took a small (6 seater) plane to a ranch on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We spent the night in one of several covered wagon tents. In the morning we took a helicopter to the bottom of the canyon and began a four day/three night Colorado River rafting trip. (It was a motorized raft so more of a tour than a paddling trip. But there were still big rapids.)

It wasn’t the most private of trips but it definitely was memorable.

The honeymoon (whether this means going away somewhere or staying in seclusion at home) has had a *long *history so I think it’s a good idea. Obviously it’s not something that everyone can do but definitely worth it for those who can.

We spent the first night in the hotel where we had our reception - a gorgeous old hotel downtown. In spite of its being Halloween night, DH was not interested in going door to door trick-or-treating as bride and groom! 🤷

The next morning, we went to the Latin Mass at a downtown church, after which we went about 3 hours away by car to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. We stayed 5 nights in the Williamsburg Inn, right in the historic area. For us, that was quite extravagant. We spent most of our time in the historic area, seeing the sights, buying things for our apartment and eating in the taverns. One day, we went to the Williamsburg Pottery, an outlet store, and that totally broke the spell. I would not do that again.

All in all, it was fabulous, and it was exactly 28 years ago THIS WEEK! 😃

A hundred years ago (no really 22)… Jasper, Canada. Then, it was wild, empty and the athabasca river was HUGE. We saw a great horned owl, beaver, caught a huge trout which we had for dinner in our stinky, primitive cabin… and then couldn’t get out of the cabin because a bull elk was in front of it and it was rutting season (they are known to attack cars so we weren’t to interested in competing for space!)

Where did you go for your honeymoon?
We took a six day drive along Skyline Drive in Virginia. No particular destination
beyond that.

Was it a long trip or short, far away or close?
It was a state away from our marriage location. 6 days counts as short, I think.

Thrifty or extravagant?
Thrifty–I was in my second year of graduate school.

Would you do it again or do you wish you’d done it differently?
We had a wonderful time. In retrospect, we both think we should have been a bit
less fiscally prudent and had gone to a more exotic destination.

Do you think having a honeymoon is important?
Absolutely!!

34 years ago. Our wedding was Friday night. After the reception we went to a local motel. Stayed over Saturday and came home to my parents’ home on Sunday because I wanted to spend some time with my brother who was down for the wedding and whom I hadn’t seen for a few years.

A few days later we hopped on a train heading for Toronto where DH was posted with the military. He didn’t have much leave when we got married.

We went to the Poconos for three days. My husband had just started a job where he could not really take time off. They gave him 2 days. We got married on a Saturday and he had to be back at work on Wednesday.

We didn’t have a honeymoon. We had a honeyMOVE. 😛

We spent two nights at a local hotel after the wedding, then whole rest of the week after our marriage moving out of state to my husband’s new job. It wasn’t the most romantic maybe, but it was still new and exciting and fun. 🙂

I LOVE Colonial Williamsburg; we had just moved to Virginia Beach in '81, and I was thrilled to finally get to C.W. The Williamsburg Inn is wonderful. I miss that area a lot and would love to get back up there. (We used to drive from Alabama to Massachusetts when the girls were younger, stopping in Williamsburg every now and then. Good memories there.)

Where did you go for your honeymoon?
Well, for the first time we were married (JP), we didn’t go anywhere. Actually, my husband was in the Army Reserves at the time and he had to go away for it! 😦 But when we were married the second time (in the RCC), we went up to Niagara Falls. We’re from Pittsburgh, so it’s only a couple hours away.

Was it a long trip or short, far away or close?
Pretty short. I think we stayed 3 or 4 days.

Thrifty or extravagant?
Thrifty compared to most.

Would you do it again or do you wish you’d done it differently?
I would absolutely do it again! We love waterfalls, and it was so calm, but there was still plenty to do.

Do you think having a honeymoon is important?
Yes… Like someone else said, you’re celebrating the most important sacrament of your life. We need that. 🙂

Alaska also has a rain forest. 😉 Seriously, they do, click here. We wanted to take an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, the cruises don’t start until May and we were married in the early part of April. I didn’t want to wait that long to take a honeymoon. So we went to New Orleans instead. Pre-Katrina, we were married in 1999.

To answer the op’s other questions. We were gone for a week. I would say considering the fact that we drove down there, we were pretty thrifty. Would we do it again, yes. New Orleans, pre-Katrina was awesome. As far as honeymoons being important. It depends on the couple. My mother was stressing me out and getting some time away with dh helped relive me of that stress.

We drove up to the Adirondack Mtns. for our honeymoon. It was just a couple of hours drive from our wedding. It was definitely a thrifty affair- we brought along our envelopes from our card box at the reception to deplete costs! 😛 I don’t think I’d repeat the same trip now, but it was perfect for who we were then- just being alone anywhere with my man was crazy romantic! I do think even a short honeymoon, a night or two, is important- just to be alone and get acquainted with your new life together! … this thread brings back many happy wedding/ honeymoon memories!😉

we went to the Scottish Highlands
10 days, 7 in one place, 3 in another, and this was just … great:thumbsup:

it was neither thrifty nor extravagant, we were still students so it was partly paid by our guests’ generosity. I had planned well in advance so that we could save on the “we didn’t know we could do it cheaper so we ended up paying the double amount” factor. Instead of hotels I had picked out lovely B&Bs, which was even better since we felt “just the two of us”, and we made the most of these delicious Scottish Breafasts, so that we only needed one other meal during the day.:o

would we do this again ? YES. In fact we ARE. (as soon as in the plane that took us back to France, we decided we would repeat the trip for our second anniversary. I’m just beginning to plan again !!!;))

and having a honeymoon was just awesome: after all the wedding stress, we had a peaceful place where we could just be the two of us, rest, and discover marital intimacy faaaar away from day-to-day life. We had a really hard time adjusting during the next months of our marriage, and having had this wonderful start really gave us the strength to make the efforts that were needed.

Happy Anniversary!!!🙂

LOL masondoggy, your dh can argue that Alaska has a beach :p.
Tropical, I left out the word tropical, lol! 😃

Thanks!

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Alaska. But we’ve been poor for 13 years and haven’t gone anywhere and when/if I finally do get to go somewhere, I want a nice, warm beach! Maybe a cruise!

We’ll see who gets their way when/if the time comes. 😉

We spent 2 nights in NYC. And about a week in Aruba.

In NYC our hotel was nice enough, but they were doing plumbing rennovations. So first night we had no heat, then we had no hot water, finally we had no water at all. So luckily, the hotel did not charge us for the first night.

Aruba was great, very relaxing, great weather.

We did a second honeymoon the following summer in the Poconos, PA. we went to a couple’s resort. Our first room was a tiny cabin with a little sitting area, and a heart shaped hot-tub.

The first night we were awoken by a strange rustling sound, followed by a scampering sound. Some creature was in the space between the ceiling and the roof, running around trying to figure it’s way out. And from the sound of it, it wasn’t a tiny little thing.

We called the desk and waited for help, finally around dawn, someone came to help, and gave us another little cabin. The new cabin was actually a “downgrade” from what we had paid for. And a little scuzzy.

We complained, and the manager “upgraded” us to one of the “suites”. This suite had a small pool, hot tub and incredibly tacky red and pink furniture. Red carpets, red bed-spread. It was incredibly funny.

ShannyK, where did you go? Anywhere? 🙂
yes!😃

We went on a cruise to St Croix for 5 days and then on to St Lucia for 5 days.

The whole trip was a surprise to me. My hub arranged it without me knowing, while I was making plans just to drive 4 hours north of Chicago (where we got married) to Door County WI. So needless to say I was VERY surprised.

It was very nice, extravagant for us definitely though not overly fancy in the hotels, but everything was so beautiful we didn’t care about the hotels anyway. It was a financial expenditure that we probably should NOT have taken on…my hub charged everything, and wow, when those credit card bills came:eek::eek: but in the end, worth it. It was the only vacation or trip we ever took together, so I don’t regret it.;)🙂

I do think some kind of honeymoon is important and something every couple deserves even if it’s short and basic. It’s SO HARD once kids and life start to happen to get those moments alone and away from everything and everyone.
