Where do I start?

I apologize in advance if I have put this in the wrong place.
I was christened Catholic as an infant, but raised as a Baptist. I never made confession and was never confirmed as Catholic. I became a Christian and was baptised in the Baptist church

What happens to my soul if I die before I make my first confessin and start catechism?
 
If you die, you’d be judged, just like you would be if you die after receiving more of the Sacraments. How you will be judged is something no one can tell you, but God. We can tell you that if you die with a mortal sin on your soul that you have not confessed that you will go to Hell.

From the tone of your post, it sounds as if you have decided to come home to the Church. Fantastic! Don’t wait until your official classes begin to start learning about your faith or to change behaviors that you may have that you know are sinful.

You should get in touch with your parish priest and ask about RCIA. It normally starts in september. You will prepare for your first communion and conformation, which normally takes place at Easter. You should also start going to mass every sunday.

As for learning about the faith, get the Catechism of the Catholic Church and a few books that go with it. I like Catholicism for Dummies - clear and to the point.

No person can tell another that they are going to hell. This is not the way to “welcome” someone back to the Church. Remember that the catechism states
God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments.

mags67, the best thing you can do is to talk to your local priest.
While you may get some wonderful information here, you will also get a lot of mis-information, and I would hate to see you give up because of it!

I’m a new member of the Church and have not heard this at all, nor have I come across it in the Catechism. From what I’ve gathered there is no certainty of the fate of someone’s soul, it’s simply something we will learn after we die and are judged by God.

You are correct, I am also correct. No one can tell you if you or anyone else has an unforgiven mortal sin on their soul. We can tell the state of someone’s soul. In that you are correct. We also know that if someone dies with an unforgiven mortal sin on their soul, then they will go to hell. The two ideas are not exclusive off one another.

So based on someone’s behavior, we might make a guess at their eternal destination, but we don’t know. Even Hitler, might have made a perfect act of contrition as he lay dying in his bunker…we don’t know. God does.

Thank you for your replies. I have purchased a book of catechism and a rosary. I already have a bible. I started attending mass a few months ago and am planning to start the evangelism next month. I’ve been trying to get involved in the church & Catholic community.

you talk to the Catholic priest at the parish nearest you about preparing for first confession, first communion and confirmation. You will probably be in a class with other adults in the same situation, and perhaps some who were baptized in a Protestant denomination, or never baptized at all, because you all are learning essentially the same things.

What happens if you die before you are ready for confession is that come face to face with God and tell him you are sorry for all your sins and rely on his infinite mercy.

Thank you. It does feel like coming home. I have been receiving the Daily Reading from Catholic Online which has been a great form of guidance (and also where I found this forum). It has also helped me with learning to pray the Rosary. Although I have to wait for the catechism classes to start, I felt I wanted to start with prayer and meditation straight away.
Do any of you know if there are requirements for participating in the mass, specifically do I have to be confirmed to read the scripture… my church is looking for volunteers and I thought it could be something I could do.
