Do we just decide to speak to ourselves or is it a more dynamic process involving the cognitive unconscious? I believe one of my ‘voices’ is that of the Holy Spirit, but I think Satan has control over the inner voices as well. I believe these voices are from afar and originate external of the brain; they can falsely be thought of as the ‘self,’ reflective consciousness.

Anyway, all that I am is limited to what these voices say! May our voices fill all of us with faith, hope and LOVE.

Hmm… fraid i can’t help, but i would certainly like to know the answer myself.

I have wondered the same thing too Robert, and more so as I have never really had that much self esteem, to be having these inner thoughts or voices of " I love you ".

and other positive " thoughts / voices " … really makes me wonder and want to find out more. I can only trust it is from God / Christ… That I am not misleading myself or it is my brain playing tricks on me … I mean it isn’t anything profound telling me to go do something outrageous, but just such simple things that really strike at my heart and make me wonder.

An I think I struggle more with trying to understand how Christ is talking to me more than anything, I know He hears me and my prayers, but I find myself more an more wanting to physically hear Him, and I understand that may never happen, but it is more of needing to learn how to spirtually hear Him through His working through others around me.

Thus I would add looking back at history those who have actually had a dialogue with God have usually been dealt with some pretty heavy news , so to actually want this physical dialogue could also be a double edge sword in a way, and thus i am content with the simple " inner voices " . Rather I try to be content , but I find myself wanting more.

This has been a question of mine for years. I don’t know how to discern whether an idea I get is coming from me, from God, or from Satan.

A few months ago I started trying to simply kneel and try to “listen” to God for a few minutes, starting out with “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.” My mind typically wanders a lot.

However, a few times I got the idea (and it felt kind of “strong”, I guess) to purchase the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (New Testament) for my godchildren. After a few times I decided to test to see if it was from God, so I prayed, “Okay, God, if I hear the word “faith” and “Bible” today, I will assume that the idea is coming from You.”

I was watching ESPN while getting ready to have dinner with my parents. Just before I got in the shower, a story came on about a basketball player scoring 138 points against Faith College. I said, “Okay, that’s one word, now let’s see if I get the other one.” I went to take my shower, and when I got out, the story came on again, and the ESPN commentator gave the entire name of the college–Faith Bible College.

So, I bought the Bibles.

Now, the father of one of my grandchildren said he never tests the Lord, so I don’t know if I did the right thing, but I know of no other way to make sure it’s God giving me the idea.

Wow! That is Awesome! “Ask and he shall receive”! You did and it was given! what more do you want?! 😃 I would suggest…Don’t over think it! Just my 0.02

In your head! 👍
In a scientific matter, your brain is a tangle of neurons. Take some pills, you’ll be thinking differently. Have one part of your brain removed, your brain will be thinking differently. Take drugs to avoid psychotic breakdowns, and you’ll think differently. ADHD kids with pills will help them concentrate more. It’s all chemically and electrically produced. We were made by dust, and dust we will go back to. But there is a spirit that goes back to God. If you’re hearing voices, see a doctor though before thinking it’s spiritual, just as an exorcist won’t investigate until a person sees a psychologist. Trust me, when it’s God talking, you will know it’s God. Otherwise it’s just learned associations.

We are made genetically and by our environment. We are the product of our past. But where God comes in is we’re able to change ourselves if we seek him. We’re going past our “product” to reach God, which can only happen in a spiritual level, and I have no idea what I’m saying at this point and should go to bed.

Wow Awesome ! “Ask and he shall receive”! what more do you want? Just go with it. 😃

This is an elementary question in psychology that never gets raised in class. What could be more central in psychology than these inner ‘voices?’ In all my years in psychology, I’ve never seen this issue raised.

There are many sources of such voices, and sorting them out is a matter of spiritual discernment.

Yes, we do speak to ourselves, sometimes deliberately and sometimes spontaneously.

Rom 2:14-16
14 When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts,** while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them **16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Sometimes the thoughts of our hearts and conscience are deliberate, like when making an examination of conscience, but sometimes the “accuse or perhaps excuse” thoughts come to us unbidden. Scripture here atrributes this action to the Spirit of God having written in our hearts what is right and wrong.

Yes, all human beings are created to “hear” the voice of God calling and drawing them. Christians who have been marked in baptism receive this calling grace more powerfully and specifically.

I am not sure what you mean when you say “Satan has control over the inner voices”. The believer in Christ has the power of the Holy Spirit to both control and discern such voices. Satan has no power unless it is given to him.

There also voiced “from afar” that may come through the communion of saints, as a person may receive a direct locution from God as most of the Saints have, or a communication from a Saint (this was the case for Joan of Arc) or from an angel. However, voices can also result from mental illness and chemical imbalances in the brain.
Anyway, all that I am is limited to what these voices say! May our voices fill all of us with faith, hope and LOVE.
If all that you are is limited to what the “voices say” then you are in real trouble. You need some spiritual direction and possibly some mental health treatment.

This a very common malady, and can be well healed by the memorization and recitation of Scripture. When one recites Scriptures and prayers aloud, alone or in communion with others, the Holy Spirit will heal areas of low self esteem and replace our thoughts with those that God has for us.

2 Cor 10:2-5
3 For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ

This replacement of ungodly thinking patterns is a spiritual as well as cognitive battle. Satan uses low self esteem and negative thinking in our lives to gain a foothold to prevent us from our birthright in Christ.

Eph 5:18-20
…be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, 20 always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Singing and praying while maintaining an attitude of gratitude helps to form our minds so that we can be filled with the Spirit.

Phil 4:8-9
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise,** think about these things**. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

Filling our minds with what God has intended will enable us to enter the peace which is our birthright. This is one of the best treatments for anxiety and depression. And no medication side effects!

If you are sticking with the Scriptures and the Teaching of the Church, you will not be led astray by any temptations.

The best solution for this is daily communion, or daily visiting the blessed sacrament. I also recommend that you use Lectio Divina with the daily readings at such times.

Mark 4:23-25
" 24 And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

The more you apprehend what has already been given to you, the more you will dispose yourself to receive more. Take advantage of hearing Him through the Scriptures and at daily Mass. This will increase your ability to discern Him speaking and leading you.

If you look in most modern college psychology textbooks you will see the “science” defined as “the study of observable and measurable behavior”. The effort to squeeze the study of the human soul into an empirical model has ruled out all those experiences that are beyond the observation and measurement domains.

Not all psychologists worked with observable and measurable behavior. Just look at all the work with the cognitive unconscious. Besides, inner voices are indeed observable and measurable to the target.

Also according to Freud, we have the super ego which is basically the conscience ‘talking’ to the ego and id.

Imagine showing a television to a lost tribe of people who have had no contact with the outside world. Now try explaining to them that the picture and sound of the television comes from broadcasting companies. The tribal people would probably look at you like you were nuts, insisting that the sound and picture were originating from within the television set itself.

Now, rethink where inner voices come from? Might it be that these voices to are originating from afar, and not a product of our brain?

It’s interesting to note that human beings make great television antennas. I do not think this is coincidental.

No, and it is also just as important for us to build great antennas for the psyche as well as the video airwaves.

The mystics and doctors of the Church have taught for centuries on how to both develop our ability to discern the nature and source of the spiritual signals, as well as how to tune into them properly, and respond to what we hear. This is what the practice of spiritual direction is all about.

I think it can be a combination of God (or angels), the devil (or demons) or our own minds. The trick is to discern which one is operating at any one time.

But I’ll give my Catholic psychiatrist’s personal experience (I’ve related the same story before), rather than my own this time.

I’d told him about a couple of occasions where a “Voice” said something very clear to me, in relation to concerns I’d had, mainly about frustration with “vocation” and in another instance, a one-time infaturation with a young lady (the voice implied that I ought to forget it!). I’m absolutely certain that on both occasions (and a couple of others as well) that they definitely did not come from me. In addition I’m also pretty sure they came from God or an angel, and not an evil source.

The psychiatrist said, “That’s interesting. Did I tell you about my experience?”

He hadn’t, so he said he’d been working in his office typing on his computer, when a voice just said to him out of the blue, “Go to Maclean!” And that was it. No context, no preamble, not related to anything he was thinking about or doing - just a three word command, out of the blue, quite clear, and absolutely devoid of context.

He wasn’t even sure which Maclean the voice was referring to - Maclean in Northern New South Wales, North or South Maclean not far from where I live, or some other Maclean.

Anyyway he gets involved in “family healing masses” due to his deep spirituality and also his psychiatric insights. About two weeks after the voice in the office, he was at Lismore in Northern New South Wales, involved in one of these healing masses, when an aboriginal woman came up to him and said, “I don’t want to make a nuisance of myself, or cause trouble or anything, but I seem to be getting told you should go to Maclean.”

So here was the second part of the riddle. He went, and ended up on some river island where aboriginals used to be “locked up” in the early days of settlement. He said there was some unfinished spiritual business. In the long run however, he seemed to think it had more to do with the lady herself, who’d become a Christian, and needed a bit of support as she was having some trouble from her own people. Something like that.

So in his case, I think the voice, which was very clear, was from God, or an angel on behalf of God.

Where the confusion arises is when we are thinking about something, and a voice cuts in, telling us what we want to hear a lot of the time. In that case, I suspect it’s more often our own, or demonic. And that’s why we need to be careful.

I well remember my old Presbyterian / Methodist pastor, one of the wisest and most prophetic men I’ve met saying certain negative things to me, that I’d do this and that nasty thing in the future, etc. etc, when he suddenly stopped with a quizzical look on his face. “Hang on a minute”, he said, “I think the devil’s telling me all this!”

And he wasn’t often wrong. So if he could be fooled for a short while, we all can.

It’s a tricky area. But Paul wrote about the devil disguising himself as an angel of light nearly 2000 years ago, so what’s new? CS Lewis introduced one of his Ransom SF trilogy by way of a character enduring a “barrage” of fear inducing thoughts as he walked towards Ransom’s cottage on a dark night. My own opinion about that is that Lewis could write about it as fiction, because he’d experienced it himself as fact.

So there’s two great minds that experienced the same thing.

👍 I contend that we are spiritual being, with all our inner voices coming from afar.

Such a position is not consistent with the Apostolic faith, and therefore, the Sacred Tradition of the Church founded by Christ.

And why would it not conform to the Apostolic faith? Does not the Spirit of God come from afar (i.e. and not a product of the brain)? Does not evil spirit (Satan) come from afar?

The Apostles taught that we are sealed in the HS at baptism, that we become the temples of God, because His Spirit dwells in us. We expereince this indwelling through our conscience, directing our thoughts.

I agree that neither evil or good spiritual influences are a “by product of the brain”, but both evil and good work through our human nature (mind and heart) to “speak” to us.

Rom 2:15-16
5 They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, to which their own conscience also bears witness; and their conflicting thoughts will accuse or perhaps excuse them 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God, through Jesus Christ, will judge the secret thoughts of all.
