Iran Minister favours temporary marriage to relieve lust
GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE

June 4: Iran’s interior minister has challenged a social taboo by urging the revival of the ancient Shia practice of temporary marriage to give young people easier legitimate access to sex.

Moustafa Pourmohammadi, the minister, said the tradition, known as sigheh, should be promoted to offset a trend towards later marriage, which he said was depriving Iran’s youth of sexual fulfilment.

The custom of sigheh, which allows couples to establish unions lasting from a few minutes to 99 years, is permitted under Shia Islam, but has been likened in Iran to prostitution.

But Pourmohammadi, a conservative cleric, described it as “God’s rule” and said it was an acceptable alternative to pre-marital sex, which is forbidden under Islamic law.

The custom is thought to have originated among pre-Islamic Arab tribes. The Prophet Mohammed recommended it to his companions and soldiers, though it was later banned under Sunni Islam.

Anger over temporary marriage in Iran
Jun 3, 2007

Iran’s interior minister faced criticism from women activists after advocating the practice of temporary marriage as a way to meet the needs of young people in the Islamic state, which bans extramarital sex.

Temporary marriage, or sigha, is an agreement between a man and a women to get married for a specified time, even for just a few days. It has long been practised by Shi’ite Muslims, who are dominant in Iran, even though it is unclear how common it is.

Sunni Muslims say it is illegal and akin to prostitution, but some Shi’ites scholars say it reflects the reality of human nature and provides for the rights and responsibilities of both the man and the woman.

“Although temporary marriage has always existed in our law, it is considered improper by Iranian culture,” Shadi Sadr, an Iranian activist for women rights, told the ISNA news agency.

The Ham Mihan daily quoted a receptionist at a hotel in Tehran as saying it accepted couples with documents showing they were temporarily married and that it had about 100 such guests per week. “Our clients are young men with older women,” he said.

Both Sunni and Shi’ite scholars agree that the Prophet Mohammad did at certain times allow it. But Sunni scholars say the Prophet later banned it. Most Shi’ites say he didn’t.

😦

This is wrong. This is not moral or a way to honour God, or to give him Glory.

I am repulsed.

Pathetic excuses for zina.

And also there are dozens of Hadith where Muhammad (saaw) said this practice is forbidden and will be forbidden till the Day of Judgement, and he never once recommended it even before it was made absolutely illegal. Not all Shi’a support this by the way, infact all the Shi’a I’ve ever personally met have accepted that this is true, I’ve got no idea why some of them insist on denying it (well I suppose it’s obvious really, sex).

That is a releif to hear. thanks for making me a bit more optimistic about this.
🙂

Its still an outrage though. 😦

i, as a Christian, would be totally opposed if Christianity took these type of horrible actions.

BUT, when it comes to muslims… well, just read all the suicide bombers notes. at least 80% of them say something about them wanting to see the 70 virgins in paradise, and seem to be very detailed on wanting sex.

people in the middle east have been so taboo to seeing other genders, that rape is very common, and people literally go crazy there. a common saudi quote is “if she’s not with another man, she’s yours.” - that means that if she’s not with another man, and if that man sees her, they should rape her.

unislamic? doubtful, but some muslims say so. but very common in the ME? yes. why? because their culture is so close minded to the natural part of life, that they have resulted into raping.

and, if not raping, then killing themselves “for God.”

i think allowing temporary marriages will help people cotnrol their horrible, lustful thoughts, and will stop so many suicide bombers. why? because they won’t need to go to “paradise” to have sex!(although we all know that they won’t be going to paradise. these muslims will be in hell!)

so, if these temporary marriages happened, maybe they wouldn’t be blowing themselves up.

It’s so wrong. Like Kad sad, just an excuse to commit Zina. Marriage in islam is very important. When we get married it should be with the intention of staying married to the same person always. Divorce is allowed under certain circumstances, but it is not encouraged. We marry for the sake of Allah, not to be able to have sex real quick and go back to being single.

As in every action, intentions are very important. If 2 Muslims get married with the intention to relieve sexual frustrations then get a divorce… those are not good intentions, and we are always judged according to our intentions.

That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all day. The only thing I agree with that you said, is that those “Muslims” that “blow themselves up” are going to Hellfire and not to Jennah.

there is a website here on the web where you can read the suicide notes of suicide bombers. i think anyone who has read them (like me) will be the first to tell you that the reason these people do such horrible acts is because they want to go to “paradise” and see the “70 virgins.”

so just go and read them. and i’m sure you will change ur view, and you will agree with me.

so you’re saying that they couldn’t possibly have been brainwashed by some other nut job such as OBL telling them to kill the kufr and blow up the Americans?? And to close the deal by saying “70 virgins once you get to jennah”? Either way, people that do those types of things will have to burn for them so joke’s on them. There are no virgins in Hell. Only fire. And those that commit suicide, when they get to hell they will continue to do the same thing over and over and over again for all of eternity while burning in the hellfire.

of course they were inspired by bin laden to do so. and 10% of the islamic population supports them (including 25% american youth, and 40% UK youth.)

but i think they blew themselves up because they wanted the “70 virgins” and i think if they were married, that wouldn’t be a problem. 96% of these suicide bombers have no wives.

if they had a wife, or were able to engage in their lusts, maybe they would just be one of the 10% of muslims who supports them, and not one of the muslims who actually does the act.
