Where do suicide souls go? How can we help them.?

Hello, I wonder could you please help me? Recently We have had a suicide committed in the family. Could you please tell me, what happens to the soul of a person who dose this? I contacted a Priest who said that they are in a waiting area of sorts, unable to be in the Divine light of God.
I am finishing the book, St. Teresa of Avail, were I read She was shown her place in hell
that she would have gone, and as She says in the book, She was always God fearing and a good Christian, yet this is were she was to go! How much more awful are the rest of us doomed to? Esp. someone how commits suicide.
I have been praying everyday for this soul. What can I do to help them?
Thank you for taking the time to read this. This person was my Husband, we had divorced. I am so upset and terribly grieved, as are our children.
