Where do the roots of the trinity come from?

I see many biblical passages referring to the father and the son but where do we understand the 3rd person aka the Holy Spirit to be from?
 
Trinities and the sacred number three were not uncommon within pagan religions pre-dating Christianity.
 
There are many references to the Spirit, and the Trinity as a whole is explicitly mentioned in Matthew 28:19, concerning baptism:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

The Holy Spirit, Jesus tells us, proceeds from the Father and the Son.

Struggling I was thinking of your posts today in the Homily. Our Priest said everyone goes through 2 episodes of the dark night of the soul, as written about by many Saints and mystics.

Everyone, to one extent or another.

The first episode has an outcome when we become less self oriented and more of service to others.
An example of this is when parents have their first newborn.

The second has its outcome in stronger or the emergence of faith in a person. The time before this emergence is often incorrectly labelled atheism. A person will be questioning, denying, searching, etc. God grants us these periods to grow in our faith, and grants us the grace to work through them.

Your questions and discussions strike a chord with me, about this.

I went through a huge dark night myself, I needed to, God has given me the great grace of strong faith, out the other end. Praise be to God.

Now I am working on what love your neighbour as yourself means.
