Where do you keep your butter?

We have the same fight in our house. I hate having cold, hard butter. My DH puts it on the top shelf where it gets near frozen. I really want a butter crock so I can leave it out in the summer and not have a butter puddle on the counter (it gets well over 100 here)

I dont think it matters…

but as a matter of principle… I voted with the wife.

🙂

You go girl! 👍

Butter goes on a butter dish sitting on the counter. The salt will preserve it just fine. I’ve NEVER had butter out long enough that it went rancid.

I have had kids who have left the cover off the butter dish. Kitten discovers butter while we are gone, enjoys it immensely, and then safely passes large hair balls….

So if you do leave it out, try to remember to always cover it!😃

If he disagrees, get a his and hers butter dish. Yours is out, his is in.

We do this for jelly beans. We have a “his” bowl and a “mine and kids” jelly bean stash at our house. DH likes to ‘stir’ the communal dish with his fingers…I really dislike eating jelly beans that have all been touched. So the kids and I have our own stash (unbeknownst to DH, lest he feel the need to add those to his and ‘stir’ them in:eek:). He did mention he was amazed the jelly beans have lasted so long this year with 3 teenagers in the house….

I couldn’t vote, but we refrigerate all dairy.

I am  that you all eat that much butter though! I hope y’all exercise regularly! lol 😉

One stick in 2 days for 7 people? That is not that much. Especially if they have toast (or 2 pieces), a sandwich, some butter on vegetables, etc. It goes quick.

I put it in the refrigerator for food safety reasons… though I guess according to some that is not necessary. I dunno… warm dairy would breed bacteria as far as I know, so I keep it in the fridge. When we want to use it quickly, I just microwave it for a few seconds. I don’t understand why this has to be a battle… I mean, it’s just butter. Aren’t there more important things to argue about? Would it kill you to keep it in the fridge, and respect his stance, which to my mind errs on the side of food safety? And then you could just microwave it a little to soften it up when you want to use it.

The salt inhibits bacteria growth.

I grew up on a diary farm and we always kept the butter out.

Yes, but regardless of that… why would one introduce a power struggle into one’s marriage over BUTTER? That’s the bigger question here. They are both damaging their unity over BUTTER. 🤷

So, get 2 dishes - he can keep one in the fridge and be happy, and she can keep on the counter be happy. 🤷

TRUST me when I say that where we put the butter is not “damaging our unity.” That actually cracks me up. We’ve been together for 18 years… we have five children…we’ve had our ups and we’ve had our downs and we intend to keep plugging along. Besides, we have this mutual agreement that the one who leaves first has to take all the kids. 😃

THIS isn’t a power struggle… it’s just a goofy little thing we disagree about.

Good grief… If we didn’t argue about where to put the butter, we’d have to find something else to argue about just to keep life interesting!

Now… back to the butter discussion…

That would work too. It seems silly to me to have two butter dishes, but it’s infinitely preferable to fighting over it! 👍

We leave it on the counter. We love soft butter on fresh homemade bread.

We have not gotten sick yet. I still want to get one of those butter bell things, because they look cool.

I can’t help but laugh that we now have a 3 page thread on the location of the butter in one’s household and how it can cause marital problems.😃

Headlines

A new survey has revealed that the location of the butter dish has overtaken adultery as the second leading cause of divorce in the U.S.

Money still remains at No. 1, primarily because couples also argue over how many butter dishes they have to buy to keep everyone happy.

Hey, whatever we can all do to stimulate the economy! We are just doing our parts!😃

Butter stays on the counter or in the cupboard in the butter dish. There is always extra butter in the fridge ready to go on the 2nd butter dish when it comes out of the dishwasher. As the daughter of a dairy princess (who was also a home economist (and very concerned with food safety) )I’ve learned that butter should always be soft and ready to spread! There is nothing worse than tearing your bread trying to butter it with hard butter. Our family of 6 typically went through a stick in a day or two when us kids were all home. Now that mom and dad are by themselves the butter may be out for 4-5 days and it is still fine. Salt does preserve it!!!

Well…I didn’t grow up with real butter. I was always used to grabbing the giant tub of margarine out of the fridge.

Now i use real butter. I take it out of the fridge in the morning, but put it back in the fridge at night. The thought of leaving it out all night gives me the willies.

So maybe you could compromise on this one? 😉

Wow, I never knew you could leave butter on the counter. My parents always kept it in the fridge.

Of course, we hardy ever eat the stuff now, so I guess it doesn’t matter. We don’t have any in the house at the moment. 😛

since we’ve been married, at DH’s request, and my agreement, we keep it in the cupboard in a tupperware with the lid on tight. I grew up with margarine in the tub in the fridge, but I like soft butter so much better. Who wouldn’t? 😃 Like most of you, we go through it pretty quick, and have never ever had it go rancid. I agree with the person who said, if it goes rancid, you’re gonna know BEFORE you eat it.

Salted butter does keep much better than sweet butter. I once made butter from a bit of cream, just to show the kids where it comes from. Didn’t salt it, but I did seal it up in a jar and put it in the cupboard and forgot about it for a couple days… It actually molded. Needless to say, we didn’t eat it. the next time I did that, i kept it in the fridge, but didn’t eat it quickly enough, and again, it molded. So, the lesson is “Buy Salted Butter”, or use sweet butter right up. :yup:
