We donate in many places already mentioned.

We also donate to Mercy Corps www.mercycorps.org John Michael Talbot is a spokes person for this group. The say 95% goes to the needy and that every donation is matched by different corporations. They service people all over the world.

I can’t remember the group’s name but we have ‘adopted’ a child in India.

Peace,
Jen

We have to be careful about blanket statements about United Way, because United Way is not run the same way throughout the country. Apparently each local United Way can be run differently. Our local Greater Cincinnati United Way does not include Planned Parenthood, and I believe still does include the Boy Scouts.

We’ve also been assured that when donors designate funds for an organization, that organization will get all funds designated for it, even if it’s more than the initial budgeted allotment. Of course that means that organization will get less or none of the undesignated funds, but people who designate can be sure there donations are going where they want them to go. Who knows how they might change that if everybody designated the same organization(s), but for now, that’s how it works here.

You’re probably right that each local United Way is different. My experience with them was very bad, indeed, however, and since then, I give to Catholic Charities directly.

My employer is a big promoter of United Way and encourages the automatic deductions from paychecks. Last year, United Way specifically added a feature to allow people to donate to any organizaiton. If you donate to a list of organizations, 100% goes to that organization. If you add specific organizatio, they take 15%(?) or something off before forwarding the money.

I’ve never given to UW, since I figure the moeny directly in the hands of the charity is better for both me an the charity.

We’ve recently decided to make a bigger effort to tithe. Probably less than 5% goes to our parish. Then some other charities:

Our diocese appeal
a local energy assistance
Christian Foundation for Children and Aging
Archdiocese of Military Services
Catholic Relief Services
local Catholic Charities
Catholic Answers
Couple to Couple League
as well as some local pregnacy help organizations

I donate where I feel called to donate. I feel that if we each give as we are called to we will not all be giving to the same charities. We have to trust in what God puts in our hearts.

2004:
Church,
Catholic Missions,
Retired religous fund,
Catholic relief services,
Pro Life USA
Pro life WI,
Disabled American Veterans.

FWIW: I had this thought that it would be great if US citizens were allowed to donate to certain types of charities (say ones that feed, clothe, educate and comfort people in the US) and have it come off of our income tax. (Not an income deduction but off of the tax itself). Wouldn’t that be more democratic and more efficient?

The state of Colorado does allow you to credit your taxes with 50% of your donations to charities that help with child care. You have to donate to a specific charity that can certify your donation. Denver Catholic Charities is one.

You can also think that if everyone tithed or put in an appropriate amount, there would be little use for welfare etc.

Yes , it would be more efficient, but then our streets would be clogged with wandering hordes of out-of-work bureaucrats who are not able to do real jobs.

I try to spread the donations between Church, the poor, Covenant House (they rescue kids on the street), the missions and Veterans…gads, so much need in the world!
